I have had problems in the past with getting a reasonable WiFi range and performance with Linux. I have a nano size WiFi adapter. It works, but the range is terrible. The WiFi on the Raspberry Pi Zero is rubbish. The WiFi on the Raspberry Pi 4B is better, but not great. I have bought a BrosTrend AC5L for £19.99 from Amazon:

It has got a whopping great aerial and is performing very well for me. I am not a power user. I only have 11 mega bits per second copper wire broadband with a PlusNet router upstairs. Nonetheless, with Xubuntu 20.04, web browsing and YouTube is good with the ACL5L downstairs. iwconfig is impressed too. The ACL5L is supposed to be Raspberry Pi compatible, but I have not tried that yet.
