Blue Screen on PC

#640770

Postby Tedx » January 17th, 2024, 9:09 am

On behalf of a friend who called me earlier:

According to him, his pc had been left on overnight, so the first thing he did was reboot the computer and the blue screen came up.

'Reset this PC'

'How would you like to reinstall Windows'

And there are 2 buttons - 'Cloud Download' and 'Local ReInstall'

When the 2 option is taken it doesn't do very much. He hasn't tried 'Cloud download' yet

*It gave him the option to cancel all recent updates, which he did.

Any help gratefully received!

I'm a bit out of touch with modern Windows but since you haven't had a reply yet...

Having consulted Google, I'm surprised that the screen you describe would come up on reboot without the user having made other menu selections.

I would try restarting the PC in Safe Mode and if it starts correctly in SM trying a normal reboot, instructions for starting in SM here:

A bit more info would be handy... :D

W10/W11?

There's a dodgy W10 update that came out last Tuesday that hasn't been fixed yet related to Windows RE (recovery) - maybe related to that.

I wouldn't chance an online recovery if it becomes necessary to fix the OS install. Do a local one via an MCT USB download of W10/11 from Microsoft and do a repair with files and folders kept in place. That will overwrite the registry and clean it up if there are any corruption issues there currently.

Ah, sorry. Windows 10.

I had hoped to post a photo of the screen but my upload to Flickr is still not showing.

Thanks for that. I'll report back in due course

One other thing to try before doing a full OS repair is if they can get into safe mode okay do an admin command prompt of sfc/scannow which will look for corruption issues to do with the OS and auto repair them. It will produce a CBS log file of everything it fixes (see the tutorial below).

Well I got going again in safe mode. Then I ran a few scans and rebooted it in normal mode. I rebooted it in normal mode several times and it worked fine but I turned it on again this morning and it was back to the blue screen.

I restarted it again in safe mode and then restarted it in normal mode and it was fine. The issue I'm having now is that it has slowed down to a crawl

I do have the option of a Windows refresh from the PC itself which I might try and I did it download a copy to a USB if that's needed

Computers eh?

Did you run admin command prompt sfc/scannow?

Try turning off fast startup...https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/418 ... -10-a.html

No I haven't. It looked complicated and when I got it to restart in normal mode I left it alone.

I shall now attempt to run it. Wish me luck.

*Why cant there be a button to run sfc/scannow? How difficult can it be to install a button on the desktop?

There is...https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/152 ... -10-a.html

That link was the first link at the bottom of the previous link I posted... ;)

Quickest way to get to command prompt is search (magnifying glass on the bottom left corner) type com, command prompt app will come up as an option, just click the run as administrator option from the right hand menu, click yes to the UAC prompt, type or paste sfc/scannow after C:\WINDOWS\sysytem32>

Probably related to the issues that are causing the blue screen in the first place. Did you try running it under Safe Mode?...https://www.partitionwizard.com/partiti ... rking.html
