Advice on new mobile & network
I lost my mobile in USA so need to get a new one. Don't use my mobile that much - just for phone calls & text (and want to use it when I go abroad), so I'm thinking I might be OK with just buying a phone from Tesco and getting their PAYG system. (Tesco network seems quite highly rated).

Re: Advice on new mobile & network
Tesco mobile is based on O2's network, so if you get a good O2 signal then no worries.

I hardly use my mobile at all, but TalkTalk (on the Vodafone network) give me a free SIM with 200 mins unlimited texts and 500Mb data included with the unlimited broadband package. Great value, and I really like to have it as a standby! Must suit most occasional mobile users very well.

Re: Advice on new mobile & network
If you are only an occasional or low user, the obvious networks for PAYG are Talkmobile (piggybacking on Vodafone) and the 3 network.
Both providers offer pre-paid SIM only deals where your credit NEVER expires.
Talkmobile offer their 'happy hour' deal with all calls costing 10p, up to a max duration of 59 minutes.
3 have their 3-2-1 deal with calls costing 3p and texts costing 2p.
a £10 top up with either provider typically lasts me 9 months.
for handsets, it really depends on your preference between Android or Windows10 (Apple is hopelessly overpriced)

Re: Advice on new mobile & network
Can I get Talkmobile or 3 network just by going into any mobile phone high street shop, or are they tied to particular outlets?

A supermarket might be better for a PAYG SIM, they tend to have lots at the checkout. For a contract SIM I probably go online.

Re: Advice on new mobile & network
i use talkmobile - which is owned by vodafone.
the happyhour tarriff gives a 60minute call for 10p and texts are 4p.
your credit will last indefinitely as long as you make one chargeable call over 3 months.
BEWARE - many phone shops will sell you a triband or quadband phone .
in fact any uk dual band phone - will work perfectly well in most of the world - they are on the same wavebands as the UK eg 900/1800.
it is mainly the americas and japan where you need a different phone with their wavebands .
