4 x 40 5/16" bolts, small quantities
I need ONE of the above, pref pan head/Philips for my guitar - maybe two, for spares
They are available, but I'd end up paying 50p for the item and >£4 for the postage
Any chance of getting a small quantity on the High St? Wilko just have metric sizes, Screwfix dont seem to stock them.

"4 x 40 5/16" bolts"
This is reminding me of the way 50mm x 100mm PAR timber gets sold in 10ft lengths.
If you find them, I bet they'll be priced in £sd!

But getting to the point, there are several different 5/16" threads it could be. Whitworth, BSF, UNF, UNC.
Why do you think it is an imperial thread? Is it an American geetar or very old? 5/16" is near as dammit 8mm, so more likely to be an M8 thread I'd suggest.

It's an American standard I think #4, 40 per inch is the thread spacing ??
I should have stated 4-40 not 4 x 40 ???
And dammit , it's 5/8" length not 5/16"
Here they are (I need silver finish, and only ONE)

Blimey that's a substantial lump of engineering!
If they will sell you one for 50p, I'm not surprised its £4 p&p as it probably weighs about 100g! (4oz.)
I'd have their arm off at that price if I were you. OR, if you resent paying £4 p&p, you could drive up to Huddersfield and collect one and pay just the 50p...

No.4-40 is UNC. It is 0.112" (2.845mm) diameter. The 40 is the pitch. I would be surprised if you could get these in the high street unless it is a specialist who uses them (such as a guitar shop, as suggested by redsturgeon). Even a traditional ironmonger's with some very old stock are more likely to have Whitworth screws than UNC.
4-40 is the screw thread used on the retaining screws on some types of connector such as the "D" series connectors used for VGA and DVI ports on computers (and the serial and parallel ports if you have an old PC).

I normally check eBay for unusual stuff like this.
You can get 20 for £3.99 but they are slotted, https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/113375627452 ... SwN5hb7V6D
100 Stainless for £5.94 from China if you are not in a hurry, https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/353748727711?hash=item525d11379f:g:EYoAAOSw1~9hfJTC. You probably don't need that many spares, though.

Edit: I have just seen RedSnapper's reply.

John
I tried - they only had the longer ones (4-40 x 3/4, for Telecasters)
3/4" blocks the string hole on Strats

They got my business - < £2.50 for 10 (I may sell some to local guitar shop at a massive mark-up)

Re: 4 x 40 5/16" bolts, small quantities
You should know that bolts come in different grades.
On something like a guitar I'd expect a smaller bolt for esthetics. A 5/16" may be under more stress than you realize. Make sure you get the right grade, not the cheapest.

It's the intonation bolt/screw* on the bridge so not under much stress
And I don't really care what it looks like, as my old Strat is a bit of a mongrel anyway (90s Japanese Squier and 90s Silver Series electrics)
*They seem to call them screws, but a screw to me is something that cuts it's own thread..like a woodscrew

Wood screws are tapered, and can have a variable thread pitch. I’ve always understood that these, with a parallel barrel, and unvarying pitch are called “machine screws”

A “machine” or “set” screw has a parallel regular thread like a bolt. There’s endless different views as to the difference between a bolt and a set screw but to me a bolt is something that gets a nut or similar on the threaded end and is ideally only part-threaded whilst a set screw is tightened all the way into a pre threaded part and (naturally) is threaded over it’s length. YMMV.

Heretic! (Though if you want you can refer to the strings as wires )
I'd post you one but I dare say you'd never see it (I'm still waiting for a switch tip I had dropped to my mum's)
I am however going to suggest that you consider buying a full set of saddles
something like: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/384368676134
or whatever style you prefer
- you'll get the screw you need and the bits that go with it and none of it will be gummed up with dead flesh and spilt lager
- and probably for the same amount of cash as finding a single
you also get to start your box of spare guitar bits
- and next time you just lift one from there

An age ago, at the Marconi Apprentices Training Centre some mechanical type took great delight in pointing out that a bolt has a length of blank shaft between the head and the thread, whereas the thread of a screw goes right up to the head.AleisterCrowley wrote:To me , they're bolts...
As is so often the case when taught something in such a setting I have adopted it wholeheartedly and will take it with me to the grave.

Chris
the screw vs bolt question is tricky
There's certainly self tapping wood screws that are partially threaded - so it's not that bare bit per se!
And if a machine screw is threaded up to the head and that head can't be turned with a screwdriver (be it slot, posi, Phillips, torx, Robertson, hex, whatever) it really must be a bolt?
But otherwise - yes
- machine screws with a bare bit would be bolts in my book
