Carpet material for stairway

Postby Newroad » June 29th, 2022, 8:21 pm

Evening All.

Two choices for a stairway carpet

    100% wool, or
    50% wool/50% polyester

both classified as "Extra Heavy Duty Domestic - Medium Contact".

Thoughts on which is superior (if price were not a consideration - I'm guessing 100% wool slightly more expensive)?

Modern carpets can be bleached these days and with a good underlay can last a long time.

Wool is making a comeback as it's deeded more "green"

The other consideration is how fashionable its is. As fashions change you might want something you can change sooner down the line. A visit to a good carpet shop or two should help you.

When we were choosing carpets for bedrooms and stairs in our last house the supplier recommended that we should choose a the lower quality option for the stairs. We chose the better quality, same as the bedrooms. He was right. The longer pile rapidly flattened on the stairs and looked worn. I should speak to your supplier and go with his advice.

I think the normal recommendation is for a lower-pile carpet on stairs, but I think that's perhaps a separate consideration to the quality of the carpet itself, given that in all pile-types we're likely to be able to purchase quite a variation in both cost and quality...

Thanks, All.

Yes, this is to choose a range from my carpet supplier (we've told him the approximate colour desired - he's given us a choice of fabrics and colours/finishes in context).

One "book" is the 100% wool, one "book" is the 50% wool/50% polyester. Both are from Cormar.

I can't add much to the discussion, but do recall being told not all carpets are suitable for stairs, because when the carpet is shaped over the nose of the treads, some types of pile can reveal the backing. The term mentioned was "grinning".

But I'm not sure how to tell in advance what is suitable, apart from asking the seller...

Thanks Staffordian.

I've rolled the dice: "Houghton Honey" from the Southwold Range of Cormar. 100% wool.

Having had a 100% wool carpet fitted in the living room at the beginning of last year we wanted to change the stair and landing carpet at the beginning of this year - the supplier I used (small local store that also does commercial installations) strongly recommended 100% synthetic to stand up to the wear stairs get.

That was what we went with and so far it looks fine, and to be honest I couldn’t tell you what it was made from looking at it or walking on it.
