Good on you for thinking ahead – you're right that with surge pricing and smart meters, things are shifting fast.

Storage heaters can still make sense if you’re on a proper Economy 7 or similar off-peak tariff, but they’re old tech, bulky, and tenants often don’t use them properly (charging them at the wrong time, turning them off, etc). Even the newer high heat retention models are still a bit clunky and not cheap to install.

If you want something simple, modern, and tenant-proof, I'd look at modern electric panel heaters or infrared panels – clean, wall-mounted, and easy to use with programmable controls. Pair that with a smart tariff (like Octopus Agile or Go) and it’s flexible for future pricing models.

Battery storage is great in theory, but probably overkill for a rental – cost and complexity don’t make sense unless you're living there yourself.

So no, you’re not mad to ditch the old storage heaters. Just go for efficient, easy-to-use electric heating with individual room controls – simple for tenants, future-proof enough for smart tariffs, and no ugly bricks on the wall.
