Low power LED to replace 15W incandescent

#270709

Postby AleisterCrowley » December 12th, 2019, 11:25 pm

My mum has a low power incandescent bulb on the landing which is kept on all night* -think it's 15W and 'standard' domestic bayonet fitting (B22??)
Are there any LED replacements around with similar light output/colour temp (warm white I guess) ?
cheers
AC
*Obviously it's not using a lot of leccy, but I'm thinking reliability, and less heat given off

Yes. In fact the cheapest ones you can find (pound shop?) are usually pretty feeble and likely to be a perfect replacement for a 15w bulb. Or if that fails you can go for the very small wall-mounting candle bulb types. Which again are lower output. There are some with standard bayonet fittings.

Another option, if there is a socket on the landing, is a plug in LED nightlight.

About a fiver on Amazon etc and it allows a bright bulb to be installed in the ceiling fitting, which might be a safer option.

We have one which is supposed to switch off automatically at dawn but as there is no natural light to speak of where it is located we have to switch it on and off manually. Just something to be aware of.

The only suitable socket powers the landing phone charger cradle thing, so it's got to be the dangling light (pendant?)
Any recs for a reliable low output LED bayonet fixing bulb?

How about this: The Gro Company Grolight 2-in-1 Night Light Bayonet Fitting.

Not used one, but the description seems ideal for what you want. - although it does look like it sticks out of the holder quite a lot. You would need to fit a normal LED dimmable light bulb below it.

Alternatively fit a dimmable LED bulb and change the wall switch to a dimmer switch.

If I were looking for a solution I would be looking for:

"Bulb in pendant":
a) An LED bulb for a fridge or cooker,
Such a bulb will almost certainly have an E14 "small screw" base and will require an adaptor (Hint: cpc.farnell.com).
If you find a bulb with a E27 "large screw" base, then the cheapest adaptors are available from Ikea ("Koppla": https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/koppla-b22 ... -90295615/)

b) Take the "brightness" hit, and install the lowest wattage bulb you can find, ensuring that you choose the lowest colour temperature.
Choose "warm white" over "daylight", Choose 2700K over 3300K.
A "daylight" bulb is perceived as being brighter than an equivalent warm white bulb.

Use the existing mains socket:

a) Depending on the form factor of the phone charger: An old school 2 or 3 way "block" socket adaptor. (e.g. https://www.screwfix.com/p/masterplug-1 ... ptor/9773p )
plus a plug in night light.

b) Desperate: an socket adaptor which looks something like: https://www.amazon.co.uk/pro-elec-Tripl ... B018WA2ONK

I say desperate because in my experience, these items aren't as well designed or produced as old school 2/3 way adaptors, and while they provide a low profile solution that doesn't stick out, they look even more of a bodge than an adaptor.

c) Adventurous: If the only socket is single gang, Fit a single to twin socket kit (or install a low profile surface outlet box+2 gang outlet) over the existing single outlet

There is always the option of a plug through light...

https://discounthomelighting.co.uk/prod ... ewQAvD_BwE

The proviso I mentioned above is more crucial with this because you can't switch it off without switching off whatever else is plugged into the socket.

Thanks, some interesting ideas, but much as I'm tempted to (over)'engineer' a solution, the simplicity of a straight replacement appeals.
It's not really a problem, although the low wattage incandescents aren't particularly easy to source locally (I'm sure Amazon etc do them, haven't looked)

There's this sort of thing:

https://www.simplyled.co.uk/product/cro ... led-s5874/

though it's described as a 'coloured bulb - white', whatever that means!

Well it looks as though they're designed 'for decorative applications that require colour and sparkle':

https://www.cromptonlamps.com/Catalogue/LED/Coloured

and unfortunately it says here:

https://www.cromptonlamps.com/Catalogue ... -B22d-6027

'Special Purpose: Decorative lamp, not suitable for household room illumination.'

You're perhaps likely to struggle to find a cost-effective and reliable LED equivalent for replacing a 15W incandescent, so might it might be worth considering some of the many 4W options (roughly 35W equivalent), and making use of a suitable light-shade to then bring the light down to an acceptable level?

Some 4W options from Wilko - https://www.wilko.com/en-uk/home/lighti ... Asize%3A4W

15W LED is about 1520 lumens (100w equiv)
5W LED is quite a bright spotlight.

I'd get the lowest watt LED and then filter/shade/paint it. They throw off very little heat.

Car indicator lights are just white lights dipped in yellow (when they eventually fail the mot, just soak them in soapy water to use as white bulbs).
When I was at college a mate would paint his light bulb black with a marker, and that was probably a KwikSave 60W.

Home Bargains does a good range of fairly cheap LED bulbs.

Every now and then Morrisons sells all of it's electricals for next to nowt due to rebranding. I did the whole house for less than £10.

You can pick up 4x screw to bayonet / bayonet to screw adaptors on Ebay for less than £1 each inc post.

A 15W incandescent is (approx) 130 lumens if you believe this
https://www.sust-it.net/incandescent-bu ... on-led.php
It's pretty dim, but ideal for navigating the landing at night
So , looking for a LED in that range. Or I may just give up!

Appliance LED lamps are in your correct range - but are usually Small Edison Screw. You can get a bayonet to SES converter, but I don't know if the lamp shape will fit into the converter.
Anyway - the links on Amazon (prime) which I looked at are
Luminosa B22 to E14 converter (pack of 2) £4.99
Amazon Basics LED E14 Small Edison Screw Appliance Bulb 1.8W (equivalent to 15W) (pack of 2) £5.49

Ticks all the boxes if you ask me: right base size, wattage, and colour temp.

Just to close this off, I found a B22 2.5W 136lm (15W equiv) warm white LED in Clas Ohlson, Reading - for a most reasonable £1.99 !
https://www.clasohlson.com/uk/Clas-Ohls ... /p/18-1448

-they do a similar 3W 250lm (25W equiv) if it's too dim
