Insects from Hot Water Tap

#431471

Postby Stompa » July 30th, 2021, 1:12 pm

Whilst running a bath this morning I had the rather unpleasant experience of body parts of a (flying) insect coming out of the hot tap.

It's an old fashioned hot water system with a separate hot water tank and cold water tank in the loft. I've taken a look at the loft tank (which is plastic and lidded). The water looks perfectly clean with no sign of any debris, insect or otherwise. There's been no sign of anything except water coming out of any of our other hot taps.

The only thing I can think of is that something crawled up the overflow into the loft tank.

Any other ideas?

Thanks

Thanks, that had occurred to me, but (given that the tap is used daily) I'd dismissed the idea on the basis that it would surely all get washed out at once, rather than bit by bit?

Thanks, I'd spotted that one, but we don't get to hear the outcome.

I don't think I've ever seen a header tank that didn't have a gap big enough for a creepy-crawly to get through the lid. But then again, there was the time, half a century ago, when I checked out my misbehaving loft tank and found the rotting remains of a pigeon floating in it.

Never put water from the hot tap into your morning coffee. Some do, apparently.....

It was fairly common for bathroom cold water taps to be fed from the loft tank. Clean your teeth in that...

In our old house the upstairs cold water - tank fed - was always described as pigeon water.

Is the tank installed with a byelaw 30 kit?

https://mcalpineplumbing.com/overflow-f ... law-30-kit

This should prevent anything from crawling into the tank.

I have no idea, when did byelaw 30 come into being? The tank is probably around 28 or 29 years old.

Thanks.

Ours is - 1960s vintage - and we do.
I've made jolly sure though that the lid is tight.

Pigeon... I remember in, um, 69, accompanying my mother to view a house. The bath had a cover on it, and served the dual purpose of an ironing board. On removing the cover, a dead starling was found in the bath. Long dead. Perhaps the owners deemed an annual bath sufficient.

The water regulations replaced the byelaws in 1999 but the kit of parts is still called a "byelaw 30" kit. I am not sure when byelaw 30 came into effect but there is no guarantee that it was followed. The way to check is to look at your tank. It should have a close-fitting lid, a screened breather, a screened overflow fitting with a dip tube, and a seal around the open vent pipe. There should be no way for an insect to crawl in.

In Scotland, the warning/overflow pipe has to be bigger. The relevant kit of parts is a "byelaw 60 kit".

OK, thanks. I know it has a close-fitting lid, I'll need to check out the rest.
