Remove toilet roll holder

#498391

Postby swill453 » May 4th, 2022, 11:58 am

I've just moved house and the bathroom has this toilet roll holder:

It's bust, as it should be horizontal but it's loose and dangling down.

I just want to remove it but not sure how. I've tried turning the domed bit anticlockwise and also levering it, but both would need more force than I'm comfortable using without knowing I'm doing the right thing.

Does anyone recognise it and know how to remove it?

Scott.

Have you had a good peer all round?
Perhaps hidden on the underside of the domed bit there's a small grub screw connecting that bit to the back plate?
Pretty sure I've seen such on on towel hangers or roll holders in previous bathrooms.

Agreed, the grub screw will probably be on the left now, as it is hanging down. Generally the backplate has 'flats' on it and the grub screw locks against the underside to stop it swivelling. It will be either a small allen key, or small screw slot, unless it is a there's hole, in which case it is missing :(

EDIT... Can you move the rail back to the horizontal, and does the domed cover move with it?

I'd expect that dome to come off; either pulled or screwed (you'll know pretty soon which when you try a rubber pipe wrench)
- and the tightening of the spindle to be behind that
Bit like a tap mechanism if that makes sense

Absolutely. Seen dozens like it.

Thanks all. Yes, it was a hex grub screw underneath. Obvious, really. No the dome didn't rotate, it was fixed and the bolt holding the bar to it was loose from behind.

Now removed and two holes to fill.

That is by far the most common way — grub screw underneath.

Whoever came up with this type of fitting is lacking in knowledge of some basic physics.

The same goes for whoever invented floating shelves. I remember drilling right through to the brickwork and inserting a steel rod to support one of these abominations when fixing it to some dot and dab plasterboard. I have also added brackets underneath ones in an office used for folders and other things heavier than a balloon.
