Adjacent gas and elecrticity supplies?

When I finally decided to have a smart meter fitted, the guy left a form saying the gas was too close to the electrics with a suggestion a barrier was fitted between the two, though this didn't require anything being turned off at the time. Googling suggests they should be 150mm apart. Here the gas pipe drops down by the side of the fusebox with a gap of about 50mm.

It's been like this for many years and having a barrier of some kind between would be inconvenient as we store stuff under the stairs and I'm inclined to ignore it. What's the reason for this as I can't see if there was a gas leak combined with a possible spark,,, I don't understand what a simple screen would achieve? What am I missing?

Cheers
