Ideas for Zoom meeting

#317813

Postby Novoiceleft » June 12th, 2020, 10:22 am

Well I guess this board has been quiet for a while :|

Social life of a sort continues on Zoom, Skype etc... and I wanted to ask this board for some ideas.

I am lucky enough be Zooming twice a week with a regular group of about 20-25 people. Most of us are living alone and had not met before the CoronaHell. We started with Quizzes but everyone is getting bored by that now.

In Zoom you can all be in one meeting - or you can go to several Breakout rooms. This offers great opportunity for more interactive group chat.

I thought of a Zoom event in which you put people in rooms (about 6 people) to discuss a topic. For example, "the most embarrassing record I ever bought". People tell their stories, then everyone chooses the 2 "winners". All the winners of each room are moved on to another room, so you have a new mix of people, and then they have another topic.

I wondered if people could come up with ideas for topics ?? Another one is "the worst meal I ever cooked". They don't have to be negative stories, they could be good ones. I feel I need to provide a list beforehand because soon people are shy and would not want to have to think on the spot.

All ideas welcome

And just for laughs, an HYP-P room.

Breakout rooms need a paid account, and designated hosts to make others co-hosts and move people around (and explain how Zoom works endlessly to people who don't listen...). Ipad clients cannot do it themselves.

A quiz with prizes for first to answer in chat would work

There is a wide range of additional features available to paying subscribers, the main one being meetings hosted can continue indefinitely (as opposed to the one hour limit on free accounts).

File sharing, whiteboard to draw on that everyone can see, screen sharing and breakout rooms are but a few that peeps are prepared to pay for.

Swerving off at a tangent, has anyone used the new Zoom competitor "Google Meet"? Any good?

I have had a couple of meetings/lectures on gotomeeting.com. Works similarly to Zoom.

Also a lecture and AGM today on lumiagm.com. I only stayed for the lecture.

I gave one of the lectures on gotomeeting.com, which I did by using both my mobile phone for the speech and camera and my PC for the Powerpoint presentation. Effectively I was present twice. I saw a recording of the result, which looked OK to me.

Yes - "Google Meet".
If you use google calendar, it is incredibly easy to set up. Arrange a meeting with someone, and it is an option under 'place'. One click, and then send the meeting invite. Then to join the meeting itself, you just open the calendar item for the meeting, click on a button to join.
Doesn't have all of the extended features of Zoom, and not as good in hosting large (20+) meetings, but great for easy set up of a video conf call for one to one, or a few people.

They should be doing quite well, then, and possibly not only temporarily. I believe I am indirectly invested via SMT.

If anyone wants to do this I have a paid zoom account. I don't mind transferring the host at some stage so it does not need me to be always available during the meeting.

That was a spectacularly brilliant moment. Restores my faith in humanity somewhat, that everyone involved sees the funny side of it. C.

Hi,

You could of course use the Open Source 'Jitsi Meet'. Very similar in operation to Zoom, No charge, no need to join, no time limit, no need to download/install software, works through the browser. Breakout Rooms not so easy last time I looked. For people who don't like/don't know how to download etc Jitsi is a doddle.

Ray.
