Are people doing socials?

#516534

Postby SteadyAim » July 22nd, 2022, 8:28 pm

Or is Covid still a concern?
Some people don't seem worried about it now, some are getting infected, some are being very careful. What do people here think?

Edinburgh's perhaps a bit busy for the next few weeks, but it would be interesting to meet up with a few Fools at some point ...

What's Covid? Oh that bug that Parliament imported into care homes as its means to relieve the social care budget/issues. Cleared over 100K beds/places I believe. Have noticed the difference. Former over-subscribed elderly activity groups nowadays are barely viable anymore.

As a family - unconcerned. 90 year old mum caught it near the start, a couple of days after being admitted to hospital following a fall in Jan 2020 - no symptoms. Vaccinated son caught it, was like a cold. Unvaccinated son caught it, again little different to a cold. Myself, not had a positive id yet, but as we live in close proximity (same living room etc.) and no precautions having been taken, guess I have my mothers genes (likely have had it and no symptoms).

Still looks like standard Parliament practice is for 'herd immunity' i.e. just let whatever bugs rage through the population and hope that some survive. Tens of thousands of illegals entering the UK from all over the world, and any one could induce/carry a real nasty, but again Parliament doesn't care.

Unlike some, we never really took action, we weren't amongst the groups that Parliament opted to pay £2500/month to stay at home. Sadly for some that were/did, their younger children in having been isolated away from general immunity building are now contracting Hepatitis and having to have liver transplants.
Moderator Message:
Lots of people did actually die as a direct result of contracting CoViD so perhaps as a mark of recognition we could not trivialise it too much if only for the sake of those of us that lost loved ones? Thanks - Chris

I'm back to going to the pub
not much more to say, other than it now seems that Covid is a thing of the past in the pub (even though it is still doing the rounds) :)

I've finally resumed my monthly get-togethers with an old mate at the Duck & Bucket. It's usually packed until 8 pm, after which the clientele drift away, and by closing time (10 pm these days  ) we're often the only people there.

I wonder what it is that's sending them all home so early? Celebrity women's darts, Love Island, or just a cupboard full of of cheap supermarket booze for when the evening's serious drinking starts? (Oh yes, the lockdown didn't do the nation's livers much good. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-62291767)

I still don't feel quite ready for the hurly-burly of a busy weeknight down at the pub, though. Not that I was ever a big boozer anyway. Maybe I'll have adjusted to that by the time that the 2XS supervariant comes along to lock us all down again? :(

Personally i am avoiding pubs until the COVID rates come back down. Also the fringe is still on increasing crowding in Edinburgh. My usual drinking buddy and I through being selective about risks have stayed COVID free.

I recently learned that another friend has been going out with COVID as we "are meant to be getting on with it". I suspect there are many others of that view but it discourages me especially as a carer for a high risk child.

As long as we can avoid days affected by rail strikes. I see no fun in catching a train home at 4.30pm.

Think you generally meet up in the Clachan pub in Soho but recently found this place and can't recall drink prices but for nosh, it was excellent. Location great and outstanding atmosphere, plus they have a server there who does magic tricks. Great fun. Something to consider for the future if and when you meet up again.

Evening All.

Never been to the Clachan, but happy to turn up - might sneak into Chinatown before or after depending on timings.

For two other groups, we've often used the Sir John Oldcastle near Farringdon - yes, it's a 'spoons, with the pluses and minuses that brings, but in terms of connectivity, N/S mainline (e.g. across the Thames via Blackfriars), E/W Elizabeth Line and the Underground, it's hard to beat.

Always happy to look at alternatives ! It's agreeing on one is the difficult part (I know this from experience..)

The Clachan is great for connectivity as it's a simple tube journey from most main stations (to Oxford Circus)
I think it was one of the ones looked at by the old Motley Fool social team (TMFGrow?) back in the good old days. The official TMF socials ended up at the Grafton Arms, near Fitzroy Square, which had a nice roof terrace (which could be booked cheap on a Tuesday)
