Voluntary Class 2 NI 2019 2020

#299048

Postby PhaseThree » April 8th, 2020, 5:42 pm

I know it's a little early but has anyone tried paying Voluntary Class 2 NI through online self assesment for the 2019-20 tax year ?
Last year the system was broken (viewtopic.php?t=17126) and showed no sign of being fixed during the year.

Here's hoping things are working better for this years returms.

Trying to select "yes" for voluntary Class 2 NI results in a an error message which includes the text telling you to "Select no to select yes".

Makes perfect sense to me...

I took this up with HMRC - and it took ages to get to the bottom of it.

Only way around is a paper return.
That's what I have had to do since 2016 and it shows no sign of changing.

I think I did it via phone. They gave me a reference number and I did a bank transfer to them.
It's almost like they want to make it difficult to make voluntary Class-2 payments.

It is working correctly this year for me. The online form says:

My total turnover is £1,000 or less from all self-employments but I wish to voluntarily pay Class 2 NICs.
Yes No
Please check help

Help about: Voluntarily paying Class 2 National Insurance Contributions
If your turnover is £1,000 or less, you may choose to complete the 'self-employment' pages if you want to voluntarily pay Class 2 National Insurance contributions.

You will need complete the sections 'Details for …', Accounting details for…' and 'Date your books or account are made up to' then you can complete the 'Class 2 National insurance contributions section.

If your profits are £6365 or more you must pay Class 2 NICs.

If your profits are less than £6365 you do not have to pay but if you want to pay voluntarily, please see the section below.

For 2019 to 2020, Class 2 NICs are £3.00 a week.

Your self-employment record shows you owe:

Class 2 NIC amount: £ 159.00

If your profits for 2019 to 2020 are less than £6365:

You may want to pay Class 2 NICs voluntarily to protect your entitlement to State Pension and certain benefits. Before you decide please check help to find out how not paying may affect you.

Do you want to pay Class 2 NICs voluntarily?
Yes No

Help about: Do you want to pay Class 2 NIC voluntarily?
Select 'Yes' if you want to pay Class 2 NICs voluntarily.

The Class 2 NIC amount figure will always be shown even if your profits are below £6,365 and do not want to pay voluntary. The amount shown is what HMRC thinks you need to pay. If your profits are below £6,365 and you still want to pay voluntarily select 'Yes'. This amount will then be included in your final calculation. If you do not want to pay voluntarily select 'No'. This amount will not be included in your final calculation.

It's Working for me as well. It looks like they have finally decided to fix the online forms. Now I just need to work out how to get the £159 to them.

The £159 is included with any other balancing tax payment or refund. It does not have to be paid separately.
