Early tax return
Yesterday I had an email from HMRC reminding me that I need to submit a tax return for 2024-2025
Whats the earliest you have ever submitted a tax return?

Re: Early tax return
About Septmember, when all the paperwork has arrived, the weather is turning, and I've little better to do.

Re: Early tax return
Did mine on April 8th.
Paid outstanding tax on April 16th (all £5.40 of it - because I hear RR really needs it at the moment).

Re: Early tax return
Got the email yesterday. Filled in what I know today. Will wait till I have conformation from a couple of accounts for interest before hitting the "send" button. However, none of those should make a difference to final figure. They look to owe me around £20, this was due to the fact they "estimated" my taxable dividends wrongly and took too long to update tax code at end of last tax year. Usually start filling it in as soon as I get notice to complete and in the past have sent final form to the end by end of May.

Re: Early tax return
I tend to do it in May after certificates etc have arrived but you can just submit it and then revise or amend it with 12 months of the submnission deadline. I have had to do that on occasion - no problem.

On the odd occasion that I have received amended information from an institution after I have submitted my return (usually May/June) I have notified my accountant thinking that I should do an amended return. And each time he has told me not to bother as the difference in tax due is small, the taxman probably won't notice anyway, and an amended return can mean additional scrutiny. He believes in letting sleeping dogs lie.
Also no problem, so far

excellent...though of course you realise that if HMRC decides is an issue it will NOT be your accountant that they pursue

Re: Early tax return
I submitted 06 April, and I'm reasonably content with my repayment showing up today.

Though his professional body (if applicable!) might pursue the accountant if they found out he was advising clients not to amend incorrect returns

(or perhaps one could claim 'de minimis non curat lex' applies!)

My accountant has taken on the taxman directly on my behalf when such an issue has arisen, and so spared me the torment of dealing with it myself.

Re: Early tax return
I do mine as soon as I have the tax certificates (for Acc distributions within OEIC funds held in my GIA) from Interactvie Investor, so around mid May.
I run a simple spreadsheet through the year estimating my taxes so I can manage them. in 24/25 my overall tax rate is around 14% (=tax payable / gross income), despite being a higher rate tax paper, using ISAs, VCTs and premium bonds to maximise my tax free income/tax rebates.
