Wow, just reading this in the FT. I wonder what the dividend would be and whether they would be available in 'retail' markets.

No reason why they shouldn't be available to retail investors, there used to be several of them, War Loan being the largest.

Brought back to mind an occasion a zero coupon perpetual bond was issued, and oversubscribed. That was an interesting one.

A good defence against negative interest rates which, after all, IIRC were being discussed not so long ago.

They should have done so at least a year ago!

When Osborne was the Chancellor he paid off all the fixed ones. The problem became that the coupons were high relative to then current interest rates, but the options to call them at par prevented them form rising above par,

A perpetual bond with coupons revalued with RPI or CPI could be very interesting to income seeking retail investors, corporate ones as well if they were in the annuity business as insurers or pension funds.

The only reference I can find to this story is over 2 years old and Soros was recommending that the EU issue perpetual bonds. Is he now recommending this for the UK government as well?

I see in the Business Telegraph that it is acknowledged that this idea was first proposed in 2020. Thanks.

2020?? I've been saying it for years! The right time is probably not now but I think it will happen sooner or later.
