Caledonia will announce its half year results any day now. Someone is expecting them to be good since the share price has been rising steadily for a few days now and today is well over £40, pretty well equal to its highest ever price.

At least this divi from them won't trigger a £600 tax bill for me like the one this past summer did. :x

Yes. Caledonia is one of my few shares still have in certificated form so I will have to pay tax on the special last summer but at least it was a decent dividend.

Unaudited net asset value and portfolio update. Note assets are cum dividend. Diversification works - three pools two of which (funds and private equities) did fine while quoted equities had a difficult year.

Best wishes,

Steve

From Citywire - Analysis of Third Quarter Update of Caledonia Investments (CLDN ) - see ...

Caledonia sailed through 2022 but shares got left behind

"A weak pound and strong returns on funds kept Caledonia Investments on track last year but private equity concerns have seen shares in the Cayzer family-backed global multi-asset fund trail to a 30% discount."

Make of it what you will.

They've always been at a 30%+ discount to NAV because of the Cayzer family dominant holding, nothing to do with private equity holdings AFAIAA.
One I'm happy to hold for the long term and to regard the discount as a sort of free lunch :D

This sort of comment is best ignored. Totally pointless comment except to show the ignorance of the commentator.

I thought the analysis was favourable :

"Despite the flagging share price, Killik’s head of managed portfolio services remained positive.
We continue to view CLDN as a great long-term store of wealth, with a progressive dividend and the bonus of some special dividends from time to time. We remain buyers, Gilligan said."

But I was answering the quote only. As Scrumpyjack said, the discount probably has very little to do with the private equity in the portfolio, so the discount is not 'trailing' in any meaningful sense.

And forrado said 'Make of it what you will', which is what I was doing.

Final dividend 49.2p/s payable 3-Aug-23

The Final Report is a delightfully clear explanation of both the current position and their (small) changes to investment policy. Performance is good but inflation hurts and $/£ flatters.

Best wishes,

Steve

Just read the RNS and nothing to get excited about. The biggest concern I had was the apparent increase in the head count because obviously they need to keep an eye on expenses in these times when inflation is eating into their results.

Otherwise it seems to be steady as she goes.

Caledonia Investments plc ("Caledonia") announces that its unaudited diluted net asset value per share ("NAV") as at 31 May 2023, calculated on a cum-income basis, was 5050p.

This is nothing special for Caledonia but I always get a warm feeling when I think that the return is on £50-50/s rather than the quoted price of £35-00. (I do understand that the discount to NAV is driven by the Cayzer family holdings).

Best wishes,

Steve
