It closed last night at over £20. I was simply amused at your terminology. Never before heard of market falls being called 'incorrect sentiment'. However even if I thought that some falls are overdone, I would be hard pressed to see that the market has collectively got it wrong. The market is usually telling us something and in this case it is uncertainty.

Interesting idea that market movements are 'wrong'.
They are neither right nor wrong. They are what they are.
Your job is to make use of that to profit.

Look I had no intention of starting War and Peace. I was simply amused at your use of the expression 'incorrect sentiment' for market moves that you think are misguided (at least that is what I assume you mean)

Dod

It wasn't me!

Thats always a positive sign when their is no interest !

I disposed of SSON, EWI, SMT etc a while back to concentrate on my passive holdings but things are getting interesting…

It's trending downwards.

I wonder if it wants to test £5-£6?

I find it difficult to value funds.

But I wonder if it's been too reliant on US tech companies, albeit I understand it invests for long term growth. So it either sticks with these companies and waits for it's investments in Chinese tech to blossom or has a look around for new investments.

Its borrowings will work against the share value as interest rates rise, unless it has hedged against this with some form of fixed rates?

May I remind you of the very first post to this topic (October, 2017):

"Current share price £7.15. Wow!

Might be back there again soon. :D

I keep trying to remind myself that this is a volatile share. James Anderson retires on Friday.

Actually that was only May 2020! What a ride it's been, that's when I bought in.

Do they still have a sizeable stake in Tesla? I see its market capital dropped by about two Twitters yesterday...

EDIT: no, actually about 3.5 Twitters.

Scott.

I have not checked by the share price seems to be at about a 4% discount to NAV which would suggest that sentiment is not very strong for SMT at the moment.

I notice the 5% drop in Nasdaq at the close. I will be considering an opportunistic purchase of SMT in the next day or two.

Best wishes,

Steve

I can't work this stock value out fundamentally. But the current trend does look southwards. Best guess, I think its got further to fall. That is a guess though.

Thank you. My logic was simple. I hold stuff like Scottish Mortgage for one reason only, the capital growth so it seems to me to be sensible to harvest some of it, especially when it is held in an ISA or a SIPP. It is though a very difficult thing to do first time around because the other side of that coin is the saying about running your profits. But SMT is and always has been volatile so it made sense to me. The comfort is that the sum that I extracted (£50,000) and indeed the current holding is all 'free' in the sense that I long ago extracted the modest original cost. It owes me nothing and in fact must be my most successful investment ever but I have held it for more than 20 years I think.

I wish I'd had Dod's foresight, and topsliced, but I held on as a long term holder, but wish I'd top sliced and reinvested lower (but who knows when the top is and when the bottom is?), but isn't hindsight a bitch :-)
I purchased SMT between 1994 and 2002 and have held on since then: IMHO over the longer term, the trend is upwards, and the meteroric rise since March 2020 is coming back to more normal levels ....
(Tonight's closing price 693p).

Well, I was not being clever nor did I have foresight. It was simple. The price was rising and I kept biting a bit off. Over five occasions I extracted £10,000. Obviously, the early ones were not ideal, but the later ones sure were, in retrospect of course. Do not fall in love with a share. Take some profits when they are begging, and do not have any regrets. I learned all that from the tech bubble in 1999/2000 when I lost a lot of potential profit with Cable and Wireless. At the time I remember saying 'Never again'.

No point in saying 'Simple' It is not, but by golly you need to learn from your mistakes.

Both The Telegraph and The Times rate SMT as a buy this morning. Make of that what you will. I think this one is better played as a monthly drip feed for now rather than a lump sum buy. At least until the economic weather forecast improves.
