Making the 2021 dividend a big 0.4p higher than 2020, or 1.7%.

Still an increase I suppose...

Given the cuts in dividends during the pandemic, perhaps to surprising to see such a modest annual increase.

Rebuilding reserves and all that.

And the share price still going nowhere. I do not think there were very savage cuts in HFEL's holdings in the Far East, certainly nothing compared to those in the UK.

Some might say a reliable income of over 7.5% is compensation enough...

That's the way THIS cake is being doled out, however, one is free to pick a different flavour. It has been a sweeter cake both income & capital wise than some other (income) morsels of the HYP variety.

Yes, I know, some might say so. Others like me might think that a drop in the share price over the last year of around 6% to accompany the dividend of 7.5% is not.

According to Google Finance it's dropped 2.09% in the last year.

(Though of course I accept it hasn't regained pre-Covid prices).

And even if it had (regained pre Covid prices) it would still have gone nowhere. Pre Covid say 1 Jan 2020 it was £3.675. I first bought it at £3.675 on 10 August 2018, so the dividend is being dearly bought.

It looks as though I will receive 7.9% on my current capital over the coming year. My historic TR is 5.13%, so Dod is quite right - my capital is being gradually run down (not as fast an an annuity would!). But it would be difficult to replace this out and out income contributor - one needs to be weaned off it - perhaps by building up some other higher growth ITs. That's why I have (in a similar sector) a big investment in SOI with a far lower "bang for the buck" but higher TR (and others such as LWDB, FGT and MRC). I'm all for mixing it up, and HFEL is one of my four big hitters as far as income goes.

High growth is fine for the future, but one needs to live in the meantime.

Some far East stuff is has been in the doldrums for the past 6 months. To sell out now would be IMO rather foolish. HFEL is never a great choice for capital appreciation but I can see a firming in TR once the Asian markets bounce back and they surely will. I am about 2% ahead personally but it still beats the return on premium bonds so from one POV I see it as a fairly safe bet on Asia which pays out regularly and reliably. I am starting to notice that several of my investments have a negative post by Dod, I may start using him as a negative indicator since he is good at spotting things I like (and he doesn't lol)

You may have to alloy his good advice with your need (if any) for income as his picks are often "down yield". LGEN being one of the exceptions.

Always happy to help. Please use my views as a negative indicator if you like, but as I said earlier, in August 2018 HFEL was standing at £3.675.
