ThomasLloyd Energy Impact IT IPO

#456121

Postby bonrepos » November 6th, 2021, 7:28 pm

I came across this new investment trust recently with an IPO to be in early December.

It appears that our government will be putting in some seed money.

In general it will invest in developing world renewable infrastructure.

It appears that the managing company have a number of years experience in this area.

I thought I would tap into the members" expertise and ask if anyone has any thoughts regarding
this trust and the IPO.

Thanks for the heads-up. At first glance (at what a google search turns up), I'm minded to subscribe. Probably at the expense of my overweight renewable infrastructure holdings closer to home.

Interestingly it'll focus on renewable energy projects in Asia.

"The trust plans to target an annual dividend yield of 2-3 per cent in 2022, rising to 5-6 per cent in 2023, and at least 7 per cent thereafter."

"It is also targeting a net asset value total annualised return of 10 to 12 per cent in the medium to long term."

That's a great plan, but does anybody know whether ThomasLloyd have a decent track record of delivering against their plans?

There seems to have been something of a run of very specialist (and relatively small) IPOs recently. The nature of the investments make them more suitable for ITs than OEICs, but one wonders why they are being marketed to retail investors. Admittedly it's only retail investors with holdings or registered with the major platforms such as ii, Hargreaves, AJ Bell etc.

Do the much larger general ITs also invest in such sectors?

Yeah, I saw the thisismoney article, and something very similar elsewhere.

Trying to find more direct information on ThomasLloyd was harder (and I have yet to try hard enough ... :? ). In particular, ThomasLloyd's own website is so monumentally stupid as to put me right off. Which is a shame, given my natural inclination as expressed in my previous comment above.

Do you suppose the government money is the classic carousel bung to a generous party donor?

A quick search tells me that they have $4.1B of assets under investment and are headquartered in Zurich so there will possibly be a Swiss withholding tax on the dividends (same as FXPO).

They have been around since 2003 but I haven't yet found anything that relates to their provenance for environmental fund management. May keep looking if I get the time.

My personal choice in global energy management is GLO which don't seem to grow the capital that much but do seem to have a reliable dividend, so far anyway, although accept they are not necessarily environmentally clean.
