Re: Tesla vs other BEV vs ICE
I forgot about hybrids. Please class them as ICE (so BEV = pure BEV)

Re: Tesla vs other BEV vs ICE
BEV are clearly superior cars, but I do hope my ICE lasts long enough so I can get one once designs are optimised and the pace of improvement slows, as I'd be likely to keep it for 15 years. I expect it will be Chinese, and certainly not a Tesla

We will probably get a BEV at some point in the future, but it won't be anything made by anything to do with "Pedogy"' Musk.

Re: Tesla vs other BEV vs ICE
I didn't buy the last car I use, I leased it because it was an expensive BEV. Until then I had always bought used cars.
Stupidly, I only took a 2 year lease thinking that technology would improve and prices would come down.
While both those things are happening, and the Tesla price cut will presumably be echoed by others, the big issue I have is the charging network for longer journeys.
For short commuting trips, shopping etc the BEV can't be beaten if you have home charging.
For longer trips the current 2% of the car fleet that is electric is already swamping the charge network. That is a massive infrastructure problem that cannot be solved quickly.
So I think I might end up with a new small BEV for local trips and a BIG old ICE for long trips.
The Greens have yet to understand the law of unintended consequences.

Same here. My wife's next runabout is highly likely to be a BEV. But for longer distances, my petrol trusty Toyota is now 8 years old, which means it's got another 15-20 years of life left in it.
In which case it'll probably see me out. And if not, I'd expect that BEVs will be more affordable, and that they'll have a better range. And that the charging network will be a bit more grown up.

Only 20 years? We got ours 20 years ago, and it was over a decade old then.
But, yes, similar here - small and electric for local (ish) stuff, keep the 2016 Avensis Estate for towing the bikes, tip runs, and distances. Although what we do with the old Toyota if we buy a BEV will vbe a point for discussion

By 2030 Tesla will have self driving cars (possibly using alien technology), which will be nice.

Yes, but by then I will have perfected my teleporter, rendering all vehicular transport useless.

Define superior. If a car can't reliably get me there and back without inconvenience it isn't superior regardless of other features that might in isolation be a better performer than the alternatives.

Re: Tesla vs other BEV vs ICE
I would be very happy to get a Tesla 3 and with the longer range one going for 360 miles range anxiety should not be a problem.
I can forgive Elon his eccentricities given what he has achieved.
The trouble is I already have an ID4 which is great, but can I justify to myself the boy's toy of a Tesla as well (stretching the term boy well into the 70s!)? Well I can't take it with me, can I.
A lot of extravagant cars seem to be driven by sad old men like me

Alien as in licensed from a third party?
That's the only way Tesla is going to get to self driving.

There is a close link between those 2 sentences. The sweet spot is to realise you're not going to need that cash to live on before you're too old to get in and out of the car you want to buy.

I'd agree: reliability is a huge driver, and getting back is pretty important too . If he has any sense, John B would have rolled that into his definition of superior (I expect he did).
I've ordered a BEV, but most of my journeys are well within range. The odd two or three a year that are not, well, I'm looking forward to whatever the challenge is on those few occasions - but we will still have an ICE just in case! (Like my investment policy, I always have my eggs in several baskets).
