What car is this ?
Quiz time again. What car is this ? The location is Hyde Bus Station probably in the 50's and it's odd that there are no buses in the shot. I have no connection to the car but found the picture on a local history site and it brought back very early memories of my childhood in the 60's.

Re: What car is this ?
Most odd. I thought I knew most cars from that era, but not that one.
Looks French to me. Right hand drive though so must have been made for UK or Japan market.
Anywhere else they drive on the left? Aus and NZ perhaps?

Nice one (and very quick find). I found the photo on his photobucket pages and didn't know about the web site comments.

Re: What car is this ?
Got it in one, having once lived in the country where it was made. Only that brand had those grilles at the front, with the horizontal bar dividing them exactly in two. And the large headlamps (very racy for the time) were a bit of a dead giveaway, as well as a hint toward the future of the brand. But I never knew they made them in RHD.
Thanks!

Maybe but he was attempting to date the photo not the vehicle!
I enjoyed looking here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auto_Union_1000 briefly yesterday. The coupés are tasty.

Re: What car is this ?
It looks very much like the DKW which a friend in Rochdale owned in the 1960s. 3 cylinder 2-stroke motor. Only 7 moving parts.

I don't see how it's possible for a 3 cylinder 2 stroke engine to have only 7 moving parts.
Your definition of a ' moving part' must be very, very different to mine.
Can you list the 7 parts ?

German engineering perhaps even if only a 2 stroke engine. But according to wiki, twice the then price of a Mini and around about the same as BMC's largest.

From my limited knowledge of 2-strokes, I'd hazard a guess at 3 pistons, 3 conrods and the crank

What.....no gudgeon pins, no bearings, no oil pump, no water pump, no distributor, etc, etc ?

Nah, mere fripperies
I think we just count the major components, not every ball in the bearings

Here's the 1958 incarnation. Tidy beast, but not exactly quiet. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zpZb7KMhU6s
Not all two strokes have an oil pump, and there were plenty in those days that relied entirely on air cooling. They would all have had magneto ignitions, I think, but the only moving parts (apart from the springs and contacts) would have been the flywheel(s) on the crank.

Re: What car is this ?
I had no idea there were cars like that....not only no engine driven anything.......just didn't have anything.
A bit like a larger scooter engine with 3 cylinders.

LOL, it wasn't just two strokes. I had a 1972 Fiat 500 (with compulsory canvas sunroof), which had a four stroke engine but which still relied on air cooling. The heater was a flap that allowed hot air from the engine to flow directly into the cabin. It worked fine, but it could be a bit smelly.

Do gudgeon pins move? Surely all they do is fix the piston to the con rods? Why would a two stroke engine need a water pump? Two strokes are normally air cooled.

Re: What car is this ?
Yes but a gudgeon pin is a separate part to a piston or a con rod and when the engine turns over it moves up and down with the piston ergo it's a moving part.
Then there is the question of what is an engine.....surely an engine only becomes an engine if it runs. It ain't gonna run with just pistons, con rods and a crank.

Re: What car is this ?
A friend's father had the more modern Wartburg Knight, which included a freewheel. A rather noisy and smokey form of transport albeit cheap and simple:
RC
The Wartburg 353 was powered by a 1-litre displacement, 3-cylinder unit that took almost two decades to refine. While developing about 50 to 55 PS (37 to 40 kW) (depending on the carburetor type) its two-stroke engine design provided more than 100 N⋅m of torque (106 N⋅m in the last version), which was a typical figure for many larger four-stroke engines at that time. The transmission was equipped with a freewheel, obviating the need to use the clutch between gears. The gear stick was on the steering column. Designed as a fuel efficiency measure and as means of protecting the engine from oil starvation due to the nature of 2-strokes, the device disabled engine braking; the car was able to coast whenever the throttle was released.
