Registration for imported vehicle >10 years old?

My son has a 1965 Ford Mustang which he imported and had it brought up to scratch by a specialist over here. It now has a C-suffix registration number.

I think that he got help and advice from the Ford Mustang owners club. If such a club exists for your make of motor cycle, they might be a good source of information.

What actual test does a motorcycle over ten years old need in order to be registered in the UK?

Will need an MoT test as it is not of an age to be exempt from one. The MoT will be carried out on the reg plate currently attached to the bike, presumably in this case a septic one (if still fitted). Once the MoT is done you can then apply for a UK registration number from DVLA. When you get the documentation back from DVLA, ie: a new V5 log book for it, you can then get your UK plates made up. You need to provide the V5 when getting plates made (and, I think but not too sure, proof of residence which matches the log book, driving licence or whatever), although most garages can get them done either themselves or from within the trade (but this is usually when they have the vehicle in front of them with a proper UK plate on it, for example when a car has crunched a bollard and the front plate is broken).

Make sure you take all your documentation with you when presenting the bike for the MoT, NOVA form, vat paid form, proof of ownership, proof of date of manufacture if available (contact the manufacturers UK importer or an owners club if necessary), etc etc. Only ever had to do this on one car for a customer, brought permamently to mainland blighty from the Isle of Man on Manx plates - yes it was a car but for bikes it is, as far as I am aware, the same process.

Thanks, I understand I have to get the bike insured against the VIN number. That might be a challenge but is apparently, doable. The MOT will be issued against the VIN number. You can ride the bike as far as the MOT station.

A while since we did this, but we took the bike for the MOT in a van. Insuring it without a reg no proved too difficult. This was a Laverda Montjuic on reverse mega exhausts.

The tester then MOTd [1] the bike using the VIN, then my mate got the V%, then insured it.
Then he could ride it,

[1] a well known tester in Winnersh who said "that looks lovely lads, you said it was a bit loud", then as we started to undo the straps and get the ramp out he shouted over his shoulder "leave it there, I'm sure it's fine". Half way home it fell over as we were so shocked we forgot to tighten one of the straps back up

I realise this question is not really relevant now the OP will be using a van, but just for information, I found it impossible to find insurance for a Dutch registered Saab which I wanted to buy and import into the UK. I found a way round it by asking a friend in the motor trade to drive it home from Hull docks on his trade insurance.

Unfortunately I never went ahead with the purchase.

I still remember taking it over the mountain at the ManxGP in the late 90s. "Redlines at 6.5k, keep it between 6 and 7" and coming up behind a bunch of 916s and fireblade approaching the Veranda and them turning around to see what the noise was. Not particularly fast compared to my VFR750 at the time, but great fun.

I don't know about today, but in 1998 I brought my french Ford Escort back to the UK, got it registered (had to change a few lights), MOTd and got it insured quite easily, but I vaguely remember being told that I should change the plates within six months.

In the event it was closer to two years. Such a shame. It was really nice, being totally ignored by traffic wardens and police who probably had visions of acting out scenes from Allo Allo.
