In a supermarket car park?

#348887

Postby Paupertas » October 19th, 2020, 10:55 am

How could this happen in a supermarket car park - looks like the Q5 drove up the Mclaren and flipped over

A MCLAREN sports car was written off after a crash with an Audi Q5 in a Sainsbury's car park.

The roof of the white McLaren coupe - worth more than £150,000 - appeared to have been crushed under the black Audi, which was flipped on its side.

This was a useful part of the report :)

One witness said: "I didn't actually hear the crash - I just noticed a large group of people in the car park."

Straightforward - The McLaren was parked and the Q5 was trying to park in the space next to them by driving into the space. As the Q5 is a big fat lump of a vehicle it probably had to go back and forth a few times to fit in, and as Q5 is an automatic the driver selects drive instead of reverse and then panics and mistakes accelerator for brake; and then up and away.

According to the onward link from Kent Live, he was the owner of the McLaren. Hope that helps? :D

Kent Live is a mine of further information:
Celebrity McLaren owners include Rowan Atkinson, Lewis Hamilton, Lady Gaga and David Beckham.

Repairing a McLaren is not a cheap business, however. According to one website, an annual service alone costs £599.

Gosh, £599? Why, that's extortionate. I'd never have believed it, would you?

I drive a Q5 and it is fitted with sensors front and rear. In a tight spot they can go off together and this can be a bit of a distraction - still can't imagine myself doing this though.

£599 sounds like a bargain for servicing that. My 10-year old Volvo estate costs between £250 and £450 a year (depending on which service it needs). I wouldn't think Mclaren owners would worry too much at £599 surely?

Whoops, sorry, the irony key on my computer is on strike this morning. Normally, of course, it's on lockdown. ;)

I think £599 is the weekly depreciation.

Apparently a Mclaren annual service IS only £599 I'm VERY surprised

So pure coincidence that the Mclaren is neatly within a parking space with damage to the front end and pushed up against the cars behind it, whilst the fat blob of a Q5 is overturned into an empty parking space next to it?

Hell of a precise 'collision' to ricochet the Mclaren back into the parking space so neatly, and then for the porky Q5 to slide around and end up in the space next to it - if that is what actually happened Russ Swift would be worried about being shown up.

I also drive a Q5 and there is nothing 'fat blob' about it. It is a neat little SUV and is the easiest thing in the world to park. I must say the parking gizmos help but frankly I lived for a while in South Ken and if you could not get into a parking space about 6/9 inches longer than your car you would never ever find a parking space.

If you own one then then it seems reasonable that is what you think.

Dod101 wrote:It is a neat little SUV and is the easiest thing in the world to park.

Then all the people who own them where I live clearly must be the worst drivers in the world.

I'm seriously impressed you can get a Q5 into a space only 0.6666666" (recurring) longer than the car itself.

Would the cars be insured when on a private 'Sainsbury' car park ?
