This may be of interest to car nuts and speed freaks. A nice account of a record breaking run from coast to coast in the USA during the Covid lockdown.
Average speed 110mph across the whole country less than 26 hours.

Re: Cannonball Run
Oh dear. The guns. The god stuff. The speeding along the freeway with both hands off the wheel (@ 11 minutes). And all at twice the national speed limit. I really must try and get a grip on my fading sense of humour.
Still, it's nice to see that there are still some good ol' southern lunatics left in America. We don't seem to see much of them these days. (Splutter.)

I know we shouldn't admire this stuff but still...
I once set my own personal record in the US in a hired Ford Thunderbird travelling from Florida to Dallas in 12 hours in 1984. I was stopped twice by the Highway Patrol but both times my UK passport stopped me getting a ticket.

Are they allowed to ignore them ?
No, it is entirely illegal and done on open roads.
That's part of the challenge.
Like the Mille Miglia but with the added hazard of the Police.
Paul (who never did late night runs around the A3/M25 when he lived in Guildford in the 1980s).

The US national speed limit was repealed in 1995, so unless he was driving a Delorean ... .
The state speed limits would mostly be 70 mph with some higher at 75 or 80. It's a matter of state law, but with careful planning they might limit it to misdemeanor speeding (<1 year in jail) rather than felony speeding. Of course they probably fall foul of other felonies, such as street racing.

Indeed. I've always considered these idiots to be spoilt little rich brats with nothing better to do. Throw a few stingers in their path, that would slow them down.
