As has been said, people panic when things go wrong and make poor decisions, even in normal driving whenever we swap drivers it is worrying how often MrsF pulls into a layby then stops a metre out from the kerb so the driver steps almost into the inside lane. I've given up mentioning it.

Ans whereas once upon a time losing power meant dipping the clutch and coasting to the left, I don't actually know what happens in a modern car with auto box, or regenerative braking, etc.
