If anyone in the southern part of its journey is planning on seeing it tonight, it's running about 40 mins early

It's been very unpredictable. It was an hour and a half early at one point, then held until time. It may continue to run early, but could again have to wait somewhere like Tring to regain it's booked path

Aaaah, childhood memories of standing by the railings at Watford Junction, waving to the engine drivers as the big beasts - including the Flying Scotsman - came through. And they always waved back!

Sadly it appears that all trains for Euston are being held north of Hemel due to a fatality

Originally the Flying Scotsman was the name of the express train service between London and Edinburgh. It predates the specific locomotive we're talking about here (LNER Class A3 4472 Flying Scotsman), which was named after it, by about 60 years.

EDIT: ok, on checking wikipedia I see the name of the service wasn't officially adopted until about the time of the above locomotive's introduction, so there is a stronger link.

Network Rail has been very deliberately obfuscating and rescheduling steam train movements for some years now, because they encourage too many idiots to trespass on the track.

Of course the real enthusiasts have their own networks to report the actual movements. But they’re not daft enough to trespass on the line. The public information is often blurred.

It only became the “Flying Scotsman” train when a non-stop London-Edinburgh service was introduced. Which of course was only possible due the larger locomotives with corridor tenders.
