So to complete the story, turns out the particular engine on my Polo (1.4TSi 150bhp Bluemotion) has an electronic water pump not driven by the cambelt. It's actually on the opposite side of the engine.
So the "independent VW specialist" price for the job is actually only £30 less than the VW main dealer, for a £500 job.
