Hi,

My Fiesta went the other way. Fiesta had a noisy water pump and deteriorating belt. I had the cambelt replaced at the same time as once the bits are off the front of the engine it's an easy job, rather than having to take the front off again.

Ouch.

Sometimes I long for the days when a Polo was a basic little thing, 50 or 60 bhp but rock solid and cheap to run. The kind of thing you could buy as first cars for your daughters, knowing that you could sleep at night.

An electronic water pump? Even assuming you meant electric, whatever next? Wifi windscreen wipers? One more thing to go wrong.

150 bhp sounds like fun, though.

Probably, it's what the service manager told me when I queried the lack of an itemised water pump on the invoice.

(They did give me a £25 refund when I moaned that I was quoted for a water pump in the first place.)

150 bhp sounds like fun, though.

It is, quite. It's a 1.4 "Blue GT" from the last model range.

The current range only has 1 litre cooking models plus the fairly bonkers 200bhp GTi, and nothing in between.

Not all engines are interference engines. On a non-interference engine a broken cam belt may simply strand you at the side of the road until the belt and such are replace, so the cost of waiting is inconvenience and a tow.

Some interference engines have sacrificial rockers. If the belt breaks, the rockers may break before the valves get damaged.
