Insurance due soon....

#444589

Postby scottnsilky » September 22nd, 2021, 11:16 pm

Insurance renewal time again! I've got all the quotes, 3 comparison sites and my own company's outrageous new offer to renew, which I have rejected. Two companies are now in with a shout, Liverpool Victoria and Saga. Either would suit me, but I'm a little wary about Saga, will they still be in business in 6 months time? Obviously we none of us has a crystal ball, but I wondered what the general opinion about them is. Their travel business is obviously down in the dumps, insurance keeping them afloat, pardon the pun.

What do you think? Would you risk it?

TIA

Saga are just a marketing brand for several of the bigger companies, basically a broker like any comparison site.

If Saga go under your contract is with the underwriter so it doesn't matter.

I'd been with SAGA for last 2 years came back with the renewal quote last month about £1 more than the previous year, was going to keep with them because of the hassle of changing. A friend suggested going on price comparison sites if they have offered me that because he reckoned that other companies may be significantly less, he wasn't wrong. I'm now with Aviva which includes RAC breakdown cover for £25 less than the SAGA quote, plus I've cancelled my AA breakdown cover which was due for renewal at £175 and I also got £20 voucher for Halfords.

Regards,

Percol

Sounds like a good reason for not investing in Aviva.

In fact Aviva are doing reasonably well with an uplift in the dividend and having announced a share buyback to increase shareholder value.

I renewed last year - DirectLine got me a far better deal than any offered by the comparison sites.
Worth checking before buying elsewhere.

That has been my experience with DirectLine as well. I find them reasonable to deal with and cheaper than anything I can find on a comparison site.

I was with DirectLine a few years ago, I can't remember exactly why I left them, but I would think it was their renewal offer was too expensive, as was this year's from quotemehappy.I remember their (DL) website was rather unwieldy.

Saga will offer me a courtesy car for £10 more than LV premium without one, very useful where I live, so I'll probably go with them.

Thanks to all who contributed.

Nobody seems to have mentioned Liverpool Victoria, they are very good in all respects from my experience and usually reasonably pric.ed

I'd agree with this. I use the comparison site at every renewal and do all three cars in the family, owned by different family members. LV is often the cheapest and I have had no issue with them in any of my dealings.

A man after my own heart
ALWAYS check EVERY year (unless of course like throwing your hard earned away)
I'm in the third year of ownwership of my current car and had a different insurer each year

I am with NFU Mutual and have been for 3 years now. My latest renewal quote is several percent lower than my current premium, this has never happened to me before. What's going on!

I think one fact is that the number of car insurance claims has dropped quite a bit during the various lockdowns of the last 12/18 months. A number of insurers, Admiral apparently and my own insurers DirectLine have offered rebates without being asked. I do not know if NFU have done so or not but reduced claims and competition is all I think that is going on. presumably as traffic gets back to normal so will the claims but for now enjoy!

From DirectLine I got the equivalent of about a 10% rebate n my annual premium.

Thanks Dod. I am sure you must be right, although it seems very out of character for insurance companies to do this (my experience with them is sadly only limited to a 40 year career in the industry). I will enjoy it while I can as I am sure their benificence won't last long.

Hi MaraMan
I too had many years in the insurance industry. I can get quite defensive about it because it is not all bad and many take advantage in respect of claims. Anyhow as you say, just enjoy the surprising reduction and see where it goes next time round.

My insurance is due soon and Aviva’s quote (new customer) seems reasonable, about £60 down on my DL renewal, though I note it has a pretty substantial windscreen excess loading - perhaps because My BMW has HUD which requires a particular type of windscreen. No other insurer seems to have this (after checking the details on the cheapest half-dozen or so on the comparison sites).

I was with DL for 4 years or so. Last year I considered switching, but the cheaper offers were from dubious brands. This year DL were double the bottom feeders. In past years LV have never been very competitive for me, but this year an LV multicar quote matched the bottom feeders. After I added on matching extras LV were a bit more than half DL, but still excellent value.

Hertfordshire, C-Max and Peugeot 207CC. Max no claims.

My neighbours renewal was £410. He was moaning about how long it was taking him to phone round to get alternative quotes. He's just bought his first computer so I suggested I show him how to use it to get quotes.

To be honest he would probably have saved time by phoning instead but he also get a lot of help learning about his computer thrown in for free. The end result was that the cheapest quote was half what his renewal was. He finally settled on a slightly dearer quote as the excess was much less but the saving was still very substantial.
