NCD one car

#447279

Postby genou » October 2nd, 2021, 4:35 pm

We have gone down to one car. The car gone had MrsG as the main driver, and the remaining car has me as the main driver. Both cars were probably used 50/50 and the allocation of one to each was of course to allow maintenance of NCD for both of us.

If we do nothing, MrsG's NCD will expire after, I think, 2 years. But it is genuinely a coin toss as to whom to name as the main driver of the remaining car. Although I don't propose to change anything until it needs renewed.

If we flip the main/named driver at each renewal, with the intention of keeping 2 NCDs available, is that going to set off alarms at the insurers ?

We usually change insurer every renewal, as historically that has proved cheaper, and don't mind continuing to do that.

My understanding is the NCD is earned by the policyholder, not the main driver, so you would have to change that each year

That does seem to be the case. So we just flip who insures the the car, and they become the main driver for that year. I have never encountered an issue where the policyholder is the spouse of the keeper, so that shouldn't be a problem.

I have been doing this, for my 2 children who use 1 car, for the last 8 years. I change every 2 years and keep the individual NCD valid. Worth noting some insurers will accept up to 3 years gap, but most are 2. I have mentioned to one broker what I was doing and was told it was legitimate so long as each child is correctly declared as the primary driver. Since they do about equal miles I have stuck with the primary driver and the proposer as the same. On one occasion I had to change that as the car went to Uni for a term, but the insurer was fine with it and didn't load the policy.

Thanks for this. So it seems all doable. Have you been asked for proof of NCD regularly ?

@genou
Currently insuring 6 vehicles per year. Incidence of being asked to provide proof of NCD has fallen to zero this year. The insurance industry seems to increasingly be linked electronically. I do keep a PDF of every renewal which I receive to provide a NCD proof back up. Had a claim recently and almost expected the insurer to ask for documents, but none were asked for. As with everything insurance, never trust them and keep your records in order.

I would call and ask them, it's a fair question, but best to check as insurers may look to wriggle out of any claim, especially if you are unfortunate enough to have a large one

That's not been my experience, but I have been changing insurer as a current policyholder. I thought they might be more picky if you were not current, but I think you've been unlucky.

Last time I changed (as I do most years) Aviva just picked it up from my previous insurer, so I didn't have to do anything about that - an improvment I would say

You may find Aviva was linked with your previous insurer.

But to give more context, the requests seem to come when renewing for my son and daughter, so 2 to 5 years NCD rather than the full 9 odd years

Going back 15 years or so I did this when we went down to one car from two, flipping the insured person every two years. But then we thought - are we ever going to have two cars again and then stopped.

Roll on 15 years and on retirement we decided we did need two cars - something frivolous and sporty for summer days and something practical to go to the supermarket.

So the existing policy which was in my name with a full NCD was used for the frivolous car as that was likely to be the more expensive to insure, although as it turned out that was only £150 a year.

The real surprise was the other, second, car which the policy was going to be in my wife’s name with no NCD at all. It seems that the insurers recognise and reflect in the premium that she has been a named driver on my policy and has had no accidents. As such the premium on brand new leased £30k car was £180 and £35 cash back, so £145 for the year.

Putting some ‘near but not quite identifiable to us’ details into the comparison sites revealed that the difference between a full NCD and no NCD (if you are of a certain age, have decent driving experience, and don’t live in a dodgy area) is not the difference you would expect. For us it would have made £10 or £20 difference to the premium.

When Commercial Union merged with General Accident, I suggested that the result of the merger would be "Commercial Accident". For some reason they went with "Commercial and General Union" instead.

When CGU merged with Norwich Union the staff suggested the name "Perth And Norwich Insurance Company", but management decided on CGNU.

A Fiat 124 Spider; the recent version produced in collaboration with Mazda and built in their factory in Japan. With it being insurance insurance group 26 I was surprised the insurance cost less than than the road tax.

But as I mentioned the real surprise was how cheap it was to insure the sensible car, a 2020 Renault Zoe at insurance group 22, with no NCD, and how having a full NCD made little difference to the premium.
