Back in 1975 a friend of mine bought a brand new 3L Capri, and very proud of it he was too.
So he took a photo of it parked outside his Mum and Dad's house in a long straight road of terraced houses. We were looking at that photo a few years ago and noting that in that half mile length of dead straight road, with the photo looking directly down the full length of it, his car is the only car in the photo.

For the private user safety legislation is making legal personal cars unaffordable for the average person.

Brilliant pictures, thanks!
I was struck by how thin the wheels and tyres were on those buses. (Take another look.) These days you'd probably get fatter tyres on a mountain bike. Never mind the roadholding, they must have been inherently unstable?

This is a very dystopian view. I predict that improvements in battery technology and in BEVs generally, will bring prices down to the point where we wonder what took us so long to migrate away from the ICE.

and the eventual developments in real full self driving will make it impossible for humans to drive vehicles - too expensive to insure and outlawed because of the danger to other road users

Agree, it will never happen. There will be controlled zones, ie motorways, where self driving will be switched on and compulsory. Elsewhere, driver assistance only.
And these vehicles will be too expensive for individual ownership for most people.

Can you think of a single instance of anything which hasn’t steadily become more affordable by most people? The manufactured cost of electronics in volume is in broad terms peanuts.

Since introduction, the price of a basic Ford Fiesta has gone up by a factor of between 8 and 9.
In the same time, the RPI has gone up by about 7.5.
So relatively more expensive, but not by much.
(Of course the original Fiesta was a pretty small car with a 950cc/44bhp engine, and you'd have been lucky if it came with a radio. A current Fiesta is a far more substantial beast.)

That's the sea change that's coming. All these cheap throwaway things are unsustainable.
Effectively, the average standard of living will be transformed.
Whether we will actually be worse off by having to live more sustainably, keeping possessions for longer, working from home, walking, cycling, more sensible and local menus, fewer pointless car journeys, foreign holidays only for the wealthy, and so on - is debatable.
But it's inevitable and they know it.
