I found this interesting - http://www.telegraph.co.uk/business/201 ... plots-new/
However, I can't imagine how any viable replacement would be anything like the Defender, which for all its nostalgic charm was a primitive beast - http://www.telegraph.co.uk/cars/land-ro ... er-review/
I can see that the Defender as it was being produced may have had an eccentric sort of appeal to some, but I'd take the view that any genuinely capable, modern utility vehicle that comes out of this project would be so far removed from the Defender that it couldn't realistically be seen as a replacement for it, and would just be seen as an entirely new vehicle, to be judged on its own merits.

Re: Land Rover Defender replacement?
I read that too and would have to agree with your conclusion.
JLR discontinued production for a reason.
Had it been feasible to get the old Defender to meet modern safety standards, I'm pretty sure they would have done so, therefore to my mind, anything new could be little more than a modern off roader, perhaps with a retro style body.
But surely if it looked similar to the icon it purports to emulate, JLR might just have something to say about it?

Re: Land Rover Defender replacement?
It's a bit like the latest Mini from BMW or the Fiat 500, really nothing at all like the originals but with enough subtle cues to give a knowing retro nod.
Or closer to the market we are considering...the Toyota FJ Cruiser

and the original Toyota FJ40

Re: Land Rover Defender replacement?
Bear in mind that Gerry McGovern, the stylist at Land Rover, has already said that us purists/traditionalists will not like the replacement for Defender when they unveil it. This also the same man who gave us the DC100 concept, pretty much universally panned by all, that looked like the illigitiate offspring of a BMW MINI and a Mk 2 Ford Transit and had the carrying capacity of a used teabag ......
