MOT health check

#498117

Postby MonsterMork » May 3rd, 2022, 9:54 am

Following on from the last MoT thread the latest MoT statistics are available from DVSA for them wot might be interested. Data is up to 31 December 2021.

https://www.gov.uk/government/statistic ... at-britain

For classes 1 to 7 (except 6) some 9.1 million tests were carried out, with an overall fail rate of 30% - 760 thousand (roughly 8%) were Dangerous fails. Note that this is with an MoT testing regime of every 12 months, so imagine how bad it will get if we only test every two years ...

I strongly dislike this tendency humans have to need to categorise safety issues as binary i.e. "safe" or "dangerous".

Given 8% of MoT failures were 'dangerous' fails in 2021, might we surmise the remaining 92% of fails were for cars still 'safe' to drive?

In reality it is a continuously graduated scale. I'd hold that say, brakes that don't work are far more dangerous than say, a set of tyres with 1.5mm depth of tread. We get the same in my own field. A boiler working well with a pinhole in a flue is classed as equally lethal as one pouring out carbon monoxide into a bedroom.

Oh, erm, yes, Cars and driving. 760k dangerous cars on the road. And that's without a driver in them.

Ah yes the old joke, "What's the most dangerous nut in a car...?"

(Although it works better when discussing bicycle maintenance. "What's the most dangerous nut on a bicycle? Yes, the one riding it...)

Trying to control you guys is like herding cats. And just for your information stripping on posts from a thread to a new thread is a boring and time consuming process so I sorry if I missed something (not really). In this life you get what you pay for and you know my rate for this. I gave up to go and walk the dogs over on the water meadows that are looking beautiful in the spring sunshine and about 20c. Stop moaning.
