Should I report this to my insurers?
Should I report this to my insurers?
Hi Folks,
NHS hospital car park. Parked next to one of these. 2022 BMW Ix3 M Sport Pro. I was early so didn't need to get out. Opened the door a bit to check where I was in the parking bay and must have just 'touched' the passenger door of the BMW. The guy was still in it and he got out and asked me "What are you playing at, you've just hit my car?". I apologised but he was a bit agressive so I stayed where I was. I couldn't see any damage (I took photgraphs after he had walked off). He didn't show any interest in exchanging details, just seemed to want to have a bit of a go. In fairness his car was only 3 months old. His parting shot was to photograph my registration plate.
Do I?
Report it to my insurers.
Wait for a claim for a new door/complete body respray/write off/etc.
Ignore it and get on with my life.
Ray.

Re: Should I report this to my insurers?
If it were me I'd ignore it. IF anything comes of it Id just say he had a moan, then walked off and never requested insurance details. And provide your photo proof that there was no damage etc.
Bloke sounds a prize A plonker. Does he really expect to own a vehicle for years and never ever ever get the slightest scratch or dink in it, with it remaining pristine? If you cant afford the scratch, you cant afford the vehicle.
(This isnt to mean we don't all have a collective responsibility to do what is "right" when its appropriate to do so. Obviously.)
I will no doubt now incur the wrath of the perfect-tin-box brigade![Smile :-)](./images/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif)

Indeed.
I couldn't see any damage (I took photographs after he had walked off)
after all - what would he be respraying?

Re: Should I report this to my insurers?
He took a photo of your number plate.....well, anyone passing by might do that. Good job you took photos, hopefully including his registration number...? How will he prove it? After all, I could take a photograph of a car's number plate and then try to report it as having damaged my car.
He might try to claim that he was in a rush as he was seeing someone in hospital and didn't have the time to exchange details ( is that a legal defence?....I doubt it). He could have asked for a mobile phone contact number...he didn't.
Claims for whiplash injury...![Rolling Eyes ](./images/smilies/icon_rolleyes.gif)
Edit...maybe he wants YOU to report it to start the claim going. I wouldn't!

No damage, no repair, no claim.
So no need to report it.
Unless he tries to commit fraud, at which point you report it to the police
Paul

Hi Folks,
That was included a bit tongue in cheek with a nod to the 'You touched my new (expensive) car' brigade. Not that I would ever spend the best part of £70,000 on a car, but I'd worried about taking it anywhere near a car park.
On a more positve note, Mrs B who recently got her driving licence back after an operation, went out driving again with no major problems. She hadn't driven for the best part of two years, including the Covid times, so I'm happy about that
Thanks for the comments,
Ray.

I am aware of her operation from an earlier post of yours so that's good to hear

He’d better stay well clear of supermarket car parks with his precious car!

My rule of thumb is to never tell insurers anything unless and until you have to.

Re: Should I report this to my insurers?
People sat in a hospital car park 'early' tend not to be having the best day of their lives. No damage done. I'd assume he was just venting and move on. I'd back up the photos with a local and an online copy though, just in case.
Re: Should I report this to my insurers?
Hi pje16,
Thanks for that, yes it is good news. Although now it appears the door mirrors do not adjust, they just manage a 'twitch'. Mrs B is much shorter than me so seat moving took place. Ford Ka 2013. The mirrors do not fold in eletrically. They each have a small joystick which I presume powers a small motor. Odd they should both fail but they could, of course, failed anytime in the last two years as I have been the only driver. Haven't got a fuse puller, missing from the fuse panel, but that fuse also does the instrument backlighting and the parking sensors, which are ok.
Gone are the days when I used to strip down and rebuild engines so another job for my local garage.
Hey Ho,
Ray.
