Plea to clean rear number plates

#568170

Postby raybarrow » February 14th, 2023, 9:33 am

Hi Folks,
When you are doing your walk round the car to check all is ok, right number of wheels, appropriate lights on, damage, do you see the dirty unreadable number plate? This recent dry, frosty weather, winter sun means motorways are filthy and something like 1 in 10 cars have an unreadable number plate (and all the rear of the vehicle). More often than not, the person who weaves in and out of busy traffic (Wednesdays, Range Rovers and Corsa seem to be favourite at the moment - I've no idea why) will have the dirty back end. No chance of identifying them, maybe that's why.

What do you mean, people don't check their vehicles before driving off, surely not :o

Ray.

Every Sunday my neighbour sloshes a bucket of 50% mud/50% water over his rear number plate.

As he says, he's never receiced a speed camera summons

oh.

I think that would be a bit obvious when trying to drive off, whether or not one has checked the other four.

One in each corner,
One I steer with,
A half-size one in the boot:
I make that 5 1/2.

The original issue is a serious one and the owner I think is breaking the law if the number plates cannot be read.

Cannot honestly say it is a priority for me. But then I don't do a "checklist" every time I drive off, but rather only if there is cause.

But I guess you could be stopped by the cops for having a plate that cannot be read, in the same sense that you could be stopped for having a missing plate.

9 times out of 10 I just get in and go, unless it's a long journey

I recall reading a few years ago that a homeless person died when the car he was sleeping under, to escape the rain, drove off.

Does anyone check under their car before driving off to see if there is someone underneath?

Ray.

In flying circles it would be "Vital actions before Driving". As you walk up to the car observe it's stance. If a tyre is flat, or a spring broken. Walk around the car to look for any damage. At night, check lights are functioning. Sit in driver's seat and fasten seat belt, turn on ignition and observe warning lights, depress clutch and start engine with gears in neutral. Check warning lights extinguish. Check fuel level to ensure there is sufficient for the intended journey. Ensure that all doors are closed. Make sure that mirrors are correctly aligned and that sun visors are deployed if necessary. Select radio frequency.

Look all around to ensure a clear road and drive off.

In an aircraft it used to be BUMPFHH - Brakes, Undercarriage Mixture, Pitch, Fuel, Harness, Hood. There was also TAFFIOH - Trim, Airbrakes, Fuel, Flaps, Oxygen, Hood before take off.

What might be suitable mnemonics for a car driver?
