I have driven to the south of France a couple of times
stay off the motorways where it is practical
some of the scenery on the alternate routes is fantastic

But you can't beat French Autoroutes. The only roads I can use the cruise control on properly for long stretches of time. And not a pot hole in sight.
Love the little aires, the big ones can be a nightmare for fuel stops. A7 south of Lyon is busy but never much more so than our M25.

trust me..
some of alternate routes are deserted and cruise control works just fine

The speeds I like to cruise I would get ticketed on those roads... and I have been. But yes otherwise I agree some of the off-autoroutes are quite pleasant. Electric charging points quite sparse I imagine.

that has nothing to do with cruise control, just your eagerness for speed.
not a criticism as I am the same ;)

And then there'll be the times when you miss your overnight ferry back from Le Havre because all the charging stations were rammed solid with other people back at Orleans or Tours. And so you had to queue for five hours, perhaps because it was one of the red or black days and the whole country was on the move. And the next ferry home isn't due to depart for another fifteen hours. :D

We did the drive down to Aveyron or Dordogne every year for the best part of thirty years, and a typical 500 mile autoroute thrash could be done in seven hours from Normandy, including a couple of stops. You had to be organised, of course, but it was pretty effortless and even relaxing if your car was up to it. (Any reasonable diesel should be.)

Best of all, though, was driving down through the long warm nights on the A roads, with the roof back and the stars above you, and the car slowly filling up with all the bugs that had been drawn to your headlights. Ah, what bliss. Wish we were still doing it. It beats four stressy hours in a cruddy airport any day. :|

Interesting little report on driving a Renault Zoe down the western edge of France and back again, a return trip of 1,777 km. Not that the Zoe (a city car) is a suitable vehicle for long runs, by the sound of it: https://www.thelocal.fr/20200826/what-i ... ctric-car/

The good news:
For 1,777 km, I spent €26.54 on electricity. Of this €24.44 went on public charging points. The rest – €2.10 – is the estimated cost of three charges on house mains. By my estimate, a similar trip would cost €180 to €220 in petrol or diesel, depending on the size of the car. My [additional] estimated saving in autoroute tolls was €90.

The less good news:
On the other hand, the need to recharge for long periods meant that we spent three nights in hotels that we might otherwise have avoided. Cost: €300.

Yeah, right. But perhaps things have improved in the two and a half years since that journey? I hope so?

I don't have a charge point in my flat so an electric car is useless to me.

Don't be silly, how would I get the car up the stairs?

Guilty as charged ( sorry).
It's true that realistic descriptions of the current total failure to create a satisfactory charging infrastructure for the many of us who <have nowhere to put 'somewhere to charge' an electric car at home> has been discussed elsewhere on lf, so I'll leave it there, just to say, 2030(?) no way!

Yes, just a gentle leg pull, but it’s not so impractical to charge an EV away from home just as you’d fill a IC vehicle. I have a friend with a terraced house who does just that.
