Road tax

#578390

Postby Nemo » March 25th, 2023, 1:52 pm

Both cars are due to renew their road tax by 1st April.

I think that I normally get a letter with a code number on it but none has arrived.

Anyone know if the system has changed. If it hasn't changed what would be the quickest way to sort this out assuming a letter does not arrive?

Thanks

As long as you've got your V5C, it's straightforward. But it's odd that neither letter has arrived. :|

I've had 2 letters for VED this month.

And MrsF's BMW will come off SORN.

Totalling £1026. or about 3x what it costs to insure them :(

Hmm. I needed to renew my driving licence this month. I am supposed to get a letter two months before the due date. No letter arrived. Fortunately, I know that I need to renew, so I went ahead, but if they don't send a letter, then fine you if you don't renew, I may consider this entrapment.

To be fair, as my passport has expired, and I have no current need to renew the passport, I needed to fill in a form and get a new picture and pay £17. By going to the post office and paying £21.50, they do the whole lot for you, including taking a new picture on an iPad, and the new licence arrived within a week.

They don't fine you for not renewing, they fine you for driving without a licence. It is not a legal requirement to have a driving licence, my mum didn't have one.

The govt don't send insurance or MOT reminders either, but it is your responsibility to ensure it is done if required. However you are legally required to tax or SORN a vehicle you own, so they kindly remind you of this obligation as a courtesy. I'm not sure if a SORN reminder is ever sent.

There's nothing to remind with SORN, it lasts indefinitely.

Just to point out that for the last few years SORN also relates to insurance as well as tax.

You are now legally required to insure a car you own even if it is not used on the road unless you have declared SORN, with a separate penalty for failing to insure it (or SORN it) from the penalty from failing to declare SORN for tax - http://www.gov.uk/vehicle-insurance/uninsured-vehicles

Yes they do for MoT's, but not automatically, you have to sign up for their reminder service.

Yebbut that's something you have to sign up for, and you can only sign up 4 vehicles, and need an email address, and I still haven't managed to get rid of a car I sold 2 years ago.

Oooh, exactly the same as the monthly payments have been on our car for the last 21 years :)

not many individuals have more than 4 cars
and most have an email address as well

Yeah - told them I sold it but still get MOT reminders.

We're back to 5 vehicles, I could set some up on MrsF's phone, or I could just remember to turn the calendar over at the start of the month :)

I would call them, if they think it's still yours and the current owner gets up to no good they'll be after you

Thanks, but as I've not had a VED reminder I think they've got the new owner on file, and it has been sold on again since I got rid of it.

The MOT reminder service is DVSA, and I'm pretty sure isn't linked to DVLA, otherwise they could just link your name and address with the database and update your 'garage' when you sold a car. You can add and remove anyone's vehicle, so changing ownership doesn't update the reminder system (although swapping to a private plate does update it with the new number).

I've gone into manage my reminders, and I have one against the phone as a text message, and this is not the one I got the reminder about, so perhaps I got around to removing it last summer and forgot I'd done it.

and I know its all understood what "road tax" is alluding to _here_, but "road tax" was abolished in 1937. I may sound pedantic but its clear that a wider audience do not appreciate that "road tax" is dead for almost a hundred years, and that its name suggests it is a tax raised to help pay for roads. Its replacement isn't. VED has nothing to do with roads - its just general revenue stream. You are as likely to be contributing to "roads" buying a mars bar with VAT, paying stamp duty on a house purchase, or via PAYE on wages than you are paying VED. It is equally clear that this wider confusion leads to some rather disturbing views of who should actually be ON the roads, which is unhelpful in the wider context.

So - a personal plea although I do understand its my own OCD/mild autism at work here, lets please try and not use the term "road tax" as it potentially merely feeds the misinformation held by some .

Sorry. I'll shut up now. I'll get me coat.

Road Tax is just an easy phase
Vehicle tax just doesn't have the same ring to it IMHO ;)
