Back Story

Father Christmas delivered a camera for our daughter in 2017. Just before her 11th birthday in May 2018 we took her to Chester Zoo and she took hundreds of photographs. Some are above. None have been enhanced in anyway.

No. I put them here for two reasons. The first is I thought others may enjoy them. The second is I'm a proud Dad. I note, however, that I can link to "Albums" in imgur (and thus not have such a bulky post) and my thanks to gryffron for taking the time to show me how to do this.

Well I think they've been enhanced....

They've been enhanced by having all those lovely animals in them!

Cheers,

Well I enjoyed looking at the pictures, and it should remind us that zoos (and indeed all tourist attractions) have been hit very hard financially by the lockdown, and desperately need our support now and in the future.

A aspect worthy of discussion is that you have managed to get your children enthusiatic about animals in zoos. My own children (now grown up) regard zoos as places of animal torture, and would not go anywhere near them. It is an attitude which makes me very depressed in view of all the good work they do.

Chester Zoo is the most visited attraction outside London with approximately 2,000,000 visitors in 2018. We have been to the zoo several times since our daughter was born. It's 2 &1/2hrs away. We set off early and get back home late. It is by far one of the best zoo's I've have been too. The animals are the first and last priority. Outwith the argument that no animal should be kept in a zoo these animals really do enjoy some huge expanses. So much so that as "the onlookers" you're never guaranteed to see any animal.

We were able to increase our daughters interest of animals in several ways. Firstly we asked Father Christmas to bring her a Bridge camera. She was 10. On Boxing day we drove out to Donna Nook which is about an hours drive from us and she was able to see some of the few remaining seals and their pups. If I recall correctly the best time to visit Donna Nook is November. As an aside we took her there 11 months later. https://imgur.com/a/fKAHMRh

Secondly we watched the documentary which was made by the Channel 4 about Chester Zoo. So not only did she see the animals but she understood more of the back story.

Her Uncle also asked Father Christmas to bring her the DVD of BBC's "Our Zoo" which is a story of how the zoo started and how from the outset the founder(s) struggled for funding, local acceptance and an understanding of the needs of the animals. George Mottershead imagined a zoo without bars. Of course there are bars but for the most they are built into the environment.
