Blackbirds squealing, sounding panicked?

We were out in the garden when there was a flurry of activity in a hedge and 2 blackbirds sounded as if they were squealing as they flew to and fro around the hedge. At one point a female flew out of the hedge to very close to us and it almost appeared as if she was wanting us to intervene in something. A male was also there.

Is this behaviour likely to have been the presence of a predator, a territorial dispute or noisy mating ritual? We do get cats around and we sometimes see a sparrowhawk in the tress.

Thanks

I’d have gone for predator.

Actually I can see 2 males in the garden just now who are hopping back and forward to each other. Perhaps a territorial dispute is underway too.
