Despite the awful weather the ones in our barn are quite busy. There's nothing we like better than sitting outside on a warm summer evening watching them swoop and dive. The cats go mad because they haven't a hope of catching them but they keep on trying.

On a mild summer day, the martins and swallows are active over our fishing loch, and as dusk falls they are replaced by bats - all catching flies over the water. And you have to be careful with the bats - as you flick your fly line through the air, preparatory to casting, then a bat's sonar will pick out the fly on the end of your cast and go for it. You really don't want to try unhooking a bat - so use de-barbed hooks, and get your fly on the water before the bat gets to it.
