Plant ID

DAK what this plant is:

Image
[My own image]

My best guess is arctium spp but it doesn't look quite right. This plant seems to like to climb on other plants, I've found it climbing as high as 2m or more. It typically has several branches from ground level. The burs when mature are very sticky (in a velcro sort of way) and neatly spherical. If you pull them off clothing etc they inevitably leave a few bits clinging on which need to be painstakingly removed. I haven't noticed a purple colour to the burs as with burdock, for example. Note that the leaves arrangement seems to be whorled with the burr terminal to the stem.

Any ideas?

i tried dropping the picture into https://identify.plantnet.org/the-plant-list/identify
No luck, maybe tomorrow will drop a cropped picture of the flower in. the original results seemed leaf-centric.

Thanks, I'll get some more samples/pics and see if that helps....

The PlantNet app has been mentioned recently for identifying plants and trees. Some apps have a stab at identifying a plant from a single photo but PlantNet also allows you to submit several photos at the same time, telling it that the image is of a leaf (or several), a flower, fruit, bark etc, where appropriate.

Of course (cough) it also helps if the pictures are in focus!

I don’t think it is specific to a particular continent, though some parts of the world may be better represented than others.

A better photo uploaded to Google image search did the trick. The plant is Cyathula uncinulata; plenty of information here:

https://www.google.com/search?q=cyathula+uncinulata
http://www.plantsoftheworldonline.org/taxon/urn:lsid:ipni.org:names:60199-1

The plant ID sites didn't help with this one so perhaps it's rarely seen outside its natural range.

Thanks for all the ideas.
