repot a rose??

I have inherited a quite large rose...apparently a red one!
its in a really nice large pot
but I suspect its some years...or more...since it was potted up
it is already shooting leaves and showing signs of activity

so is it too late for me to repot with some fresh soil and compost
it will not be an easy task inview size and thorns
but.....

No, it's hardly Spring yet. In fact now is probably the best time to repot it. All roses should be pruned quite hard, so that will make it easier to handle - less thorny stems to worry about

...it is best to hard prune patio roses in spring, otherwise they will become leggy. Don’t worry about how you do this – just cut them back hard. This is also a good time to refresh the compost and repot if necessary.

I would just prune it quite hard, remove the top two or three inches of compost, give the rest a careful fork over, give it a good soaking and replace the top few inches with fresh compost and incorporate some rose fertiliser into it. Of course if it is looking really pot bound you may need to repot it but that is probably unnecessary.

I would agree with Dod. There may be no need to repot it. My pot roses have been chosen for their suitability for growing in (large) pots and I do not repot them. I just do as he does, pruning back quite hard and replacing the top 3 inches of soil/compost with new stuff mixed with fertiliser ( I use pelleted chicken manure….). Mine are also starting to sprout etc.
