Recommendations for Netflix SciFi film?

#471195

Postby stevensfo » January 7th, 2022, 4:40 pm

Wife has gone off to visit her mother so I'm alone with son no.2 who's visiting and is a SciFi fan, like me.

Any good films we haven't seen? (Film rather than a series) I only tend to watch SciFi when he's around so there are probably a few films I haven't seen from the last couple of years.

Don't Look Up on Netflix.

Brian Cox did a short video about the film from a scientific pov.

"District 9.... "

An older film (2009) and set in South Africa. You might have seen this already but I'll put it forward as a suggestion.

"Attack The Block".

More of a Sci FI comedy ... set in London.

"Passengers"
set in ....space. Jennifer Lawrence, Chris Pratt, Michael Sheen

Arrival is one of the more intelligent ones, and is on Netflix.

A classic Luc Besson film that is so far off the terrible end of the scale it has come back on the other side! And you get to witness Cara Delevingne ‘acting’ and Clive Owen chewing the scenery.

Good film, terrible (Hollywood) ending which could have been made far more interesting.

I second "In Time", one of my top 10 films. In the future, everyone stops ageing at 25. Time and money are interchangeable (e.g. a cup of coffee costs 6 minutes, a vintage sports car 57 years). If your personal clock counts down to zero you drop dead (going "All In" in a game of poker takes on a new meaning!).

But if you keep making enough money you can live forever, though stealing people's time is very popular. Made by the people who did "Gattaca", it has a similar look.

"The Island" - survivors on an isolated island are protected against the contaminated world outside. Michael Bay film, so lots of action.

"Orbiter 9" - Spanish. Young woman, brought up from a baby on a starship by robots, has never seen another human. Until the ship breaks down and a way station sends out a hunky repairman

"Serenity" - film follow up to Joss Whedon's series "Firefly"

Thanks a million guys!!

In the end we saw 'Love and Monsters', not one to be set for the A-level Eng. Lit. exam, but fun for a Friday.

Yes, 'Arrival' is intelligent, and I liked it, but didn't quite understand the end. Rather like 'Interstellar', a film that I remember for the haunting music more than anything.

So plenty on the list for the weekend. ;)

I'd forgotten about that one - I think the family quite enjoyed it at the time

There's a "thing" with netflix where you can target specific genres for browsing

You need to have a look at their genre list: https://www.whatthetech.tv/netflix-secret-codes/

and then go to to: https://www.netflix.com/browse/genre/75405 where the number is the code that you've looked up
- that one there... that's Zombie Horror Movies

There might be a more conventional way to target their classification categories: but I've not found it yet?
Easy enough to find Sci-Fi but then I've got to scroll through arbitrary sub-lists
- when if I know I'm looking for sci-fi horror https://www.netflix.com/browse/genre/1694 will do it

Lucy is a film that you absolutely must watch. The film is based on science fiction. It depicts the progression of humanity. The actress is influenced by heavy drugs that endow her with extraordinary powers.

By dedicating her life, she used her power to gain knowledge and distribute it to others. She is able to solve unsolved puzzles as a result of this. I think you should have to watch it.

Aniara is a Swedish scifi (2018) with a lot of Tarkovsky influences. A very disturbing film that is a world away from the usual US made scifi BEMs available for streaming. Not sure whether on Netflix - I watched via BFI app/Amazon Prime.

Certainly well above average.
