7/10. From the Marvel stable, a dark prequel to Batman's "Joker" character, which is completely different to the normal superhero/supervillain stuff.
An awful lot of laughs in this film, but none of them are happy laughs. Occasional bloody moments.
This film is all about the Joker's journey from sad and mad to bad, exploring how this journey was expedited by an uncaring capitalist society too keen on supporting billionaires to bother about social care for the less fortunate, which ends up creating up big problems for itself. Definitely not your standard Marvel comic-strip storyline. Visually very well shot and lots of scenes with a big impact, as the film invites us to empathise with Arthur Fleck (as he is before he turns into the Joker) and his struggles to cope with life and society, and the cruelty he faces both from individuals and wider society.
Joaquim Phoenix is very effective in making the main character believable and someone the audience can care about. It's fairly slow-paced until the final third, but I didn't find it dull at any point.
