Shoestring
(well only if the cast haven't aged...a sixty- eight year old Trevor Eve running round Brizzle with a scruffy tie and a bowl haircut would be a bit odd)

Unbroacastable these days, sadly. Those two never did recover from the media allegations that they'd been on the weed since 1953. Mind you, it wasn't as criminally suspect as muffin the mule. ;)

I think you'd still get a lot of votes for https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ok6CoIwcJ-E . Or even Bagpuss, which, incredibly, only ever made 13 episodes.

For grown-ups, I'm still looking for a repeat of the BBC's short Mental Health Season in 2019. Alastair Campbell talking about depression and alcoholism, David Harewood rediscovering the background to his period of violent psychosis. Absolutely electrifying, and so powerfully honest.

Wouldn't mind seeing the Roald Dahl Tales of the Unexpected series again - if only to find out whether they were as gripping the second time round as they were the first time? Corny as hell, but that was part of their surreal charm.

Careful what you wish for. I absolutely loved Catweazle when I was a kid. It's playing again on Talking Pictures TV and one episode was enough to remind me that you should never revisit the past.

I would like to see 'Horizon' back on TV as a serious scientific programme though and I fondly remember 'Equinox' on C4. And 'Tomorrow's World' has never really been replaced.

Funny, I was wondering about nominating Tomorrow's World. But on the strict understanding (a) that it should probably have a comedy-retro slot, and (b) that most of its extremely capable presenters (so many top names!) are probably squirming a bit. Forecasting's a dangerous game when you just know for sure that somebody will be taking the mickey out of your hairstyle and your brickphone and your Sinclair C5. ;)

Okay, then. Hitch-Hiker's Guide, 1981 TV version. Just for old time's sake.

The one clip from Tomorrow's World that stands out for me is the one where the chap squirts a mains powered drill with a WD40 type of spray and then plunges his hand into a tank of water (with the drill still going). Talk about having faith in your product :)

Hear! Hear! I think nowadays it always has to be, you know, 'relevant'. Which means it's 'All about YOU!'. Bah! Humbug.

I don't! Sure, I "remember" it, it could never make up its mind what it was about, leastways I couldn't. After a 'science'(???) doc about a US drugs bust team busting into peoples homes looking for narcotics and crims I just gave up on it. I believe it was just a slot for a random collection of documentaries made here and there on various topics.

Mind you, the original Channel 4 still crosses my mind now and then, when I am feeling particularly dazed and confused. :)
What was their 'science'(?????) program called? 'Shouts and Murmurs' - or was I hallucinating that? I have never been able to trace such a programme since.

Mind you, watching at the time (indeed watching much of C4 at that time!) used to make me feel somebody must have put something illegal in my coffee.

Indeed, though really a technology programme. Plus in the eighties there was a proliferation of science type programmes on BBC 1, QED etc.

Mind you, in later years I'm afraid even Horizon had it's err... 'moments'.

I remember writing a later of complaint* to the then Horizon editor - Jana Bennet? Subsequently somebody high up in the BBC hierarchy - complaining after a Horizon episode about Auschwitz. Compared it to Equinox!

Nothing wrong with a documentary about Auschwitz, but what on earth was it doing in the Horizon slot?

Oh I see! The Germans used CHEMICALS to kill their captives...

Well I suppose, as nuclear physics often involves fast moving small things, 'Around with Aliss' would also be suitable for Horizon.

It was cancelled because they ran out of cardboard to make the fake guns and sets :D

Those were the days! I've since bought all the series on DVD box set.

I loved character play e.g. the sparring between Avon and the rest of them.

I was also very partial to Jenna and Soolin ;)

I've got the DVD set of Public Eye - the Eton episodes. I used to live near Eton and walked past Frank Marker's office many times -it was an antiques place, but now 'to let'

Interesting to spot all the local landmarks

Really good series I thought. Intelligent and low-key.
