An appreciation of Dusty Springfield. If there's been a better female vocalist, I don't know her.

Karen Carpenter, Agnetha, Frida, Dame Emma Kirky, Lucy Crowe.

Not necessarily better, but all with pure cream or silver in their voices: all priceless.

Joan Baez when in her 20s and 30s. I heard her in concert a few years ago; her musicianship was as good as ever but, inevitably and sensibly, sings in a lower key. She was due to retire in 2019-20 so perhaps already has.

And I would agree with the rec for Emma Kirkby. I have heard her (live - it might have been in York Minster during an Early Music Festival) singing Hildegarde of Bingen's "O, Jerusalem, aurea civitas" that riveted the audience and sent tingles down my spine!

Dusty was good, but my vote (for a singer from the same era) would go to Grace Slick (caution..... Marmite Law applies)

I'd vote for Sandy Denny.

Bjork is the best female singer I have ever heard sing live by a country mile. Not everyone's cup of Darjeeling, I know, but an incredible voice.

All the best, Si

Barbara Dixon is a singer IMO, Elaine Page isnt. They once did a duet and the difference was clear to me.

Listen to this and see if you agree https://youtu.be/s2SDInk6voA

Like Dusty they both belt it out. My daughter is a professional singer but quite different. Its her birthday soon, presents from fans around the world have started arriving, it lovely.

Adrienne Warren who played the part of Tina in the Tina Turner musical. Have to say I was never a Tina fan, but this girl hypnotised me in her version of River Deep, Mountain High. If you're short on time, skip the first two minutes, but don't miss any of the rest!

Ruby Turner. An amazing voice and performer.

A great singer. She previously sang with the Springfields, (including her brother Tom Springfield). I still have an LP of her Greatest Hits, though my Springfields LP seems to have disappeared.
