Happy Birthday Bob

Dylan is 80 today.

I only "discovered" Dylan 10 years ago. I went to a concert in Glasgow, thinking that he was obviously a renowned artist and I probably wouldn't get another chance to see him. Atrocious acoustics and WAAAAY too loud, but I heard enough to pique my interest, so got the setlist and started searching through Spotify. I knew that Dylan had written a massive number of songs, and many of them, to my ears at least, are worthless. But I'm still finding an increasing number of tracks which are just brilliant. OK, he can't really sing, but his voice works well with many of his songs (especially "I Contain Multitudes"). And I'm getting more interested in his lyrics.... I can now see why he got the Nobel prize for literature.

Anyone who says they don't like Dylan simply hasn't heard enough of his music.

Some of my favourites (not necessarily the best versions, but the best I could find freely available on Youtube, etc):

I have to be in the mood for Dylan but when he's good, he's very, very good. My favourite put-down lyric of all time ....

I wish that for just one time
You could stand inside my shoes
And just for that one moment I could be you
Yes, I wish that for just one time
You could stand inside my shoes
You’d know what a drag it is
To see you

Nothing cuts like a Dylan lyric. I've always admired...

Idiot wind
Blowing every time you move your teeth
You're an idiot, babe
It's a wonder that you still know how to breathe
I can't feel you anymore
I can't even touch the books you've read
Every time I crawl past your door
I been wishin' I was somebody else instead
Down the highway, down the tracks
Down the road to ecstasy
I followed you beneath the stars
Hounded by your memory
And all your ragin' glory

Kiloran - have yourself a treat and watch the Rolling Thunder Review - 2019 documentary on Netflix and DVD made by Scorsese - brilliant concert footage from the tour in the mid 1970s - also so amusing. When asked by Scorsese what he remembers he mutters the immortal line 'It happened so long ago, I wasn’t even born'.
