BBC 4 'Storyville'

#439587

Postby Redmires » September 4th, 2021, 1:13 am

Does anyone here watch the 'Storyville' docs on BBC 4 ? Whatever the subject, they are always a fascinating and interesting watch. Recent standouts include 'Hillsong Church' (cult-like Christian megachurch), 'Carlos Ghosn' (ex-Renault/Nissan boss) and a very touching 'Petite Fille' (French child with gender dysmorphia). Tonight I caught up with 'Cartel Land', a jaw dropping account of Mexican drug gangs and the opposing Autodefensas vigilante group. It left me reeling, sorry for the ordinary citizens who have to live there and grateful that I don't...... The best series on TV by a mile.

Normally Nord VPN works well for the BBC iPlayer
- but I've probably jinxed it by saying that ;)

I always wonder why the BBC doesn't just start a global subscription model for the iplayer, is there some technical or legal reason?

I think the licensing is complicated.
They've partnered with various outlets already for their own content; I think they also have about 50% share in BritBox.

Anyways, I've got the Hillsong episode of Storyville ready to go
- seems like a good place to start given our PM's involvement in the cult

The reason Storyville is decent is that hardly any of the content is made by the BBC. They tend to buy it in - so you don't get the usual BBC propaganda in the middle of an otherwise decent documentary.

Well I watch this one and thoroughly enjoyed it

My one very minor criticism would be that it could have done with a little bit more of an obvious arc over the running time
- perhaps that's a result of them going with an explicit chapter based approach? (some content touched on earlier in a way that made later "reveals" a little bit less impactful)
- but that's a very minor point and it certainly held our attention

All in all, it was fascinating, creepy, and funny (certainly didn't expect to laugh so much) - with some stunning photography

Glad to see the BBC Studios still producing such excellent content ;)
- and well worth jumping though a VPN to get my hands on it

Let's see what else takes my fancy

Dragging this thread up to date, Storyville goes from strength to strength. Interesting one this week about North Korea featuring a family of 5 who fled to South Korea via China, Vietnam, Laos & Thailand. This included a 10 hour arduous jungle trek, all the more remarkable because of the two very young children and the 80 year old grandma involved. Quite a gripping episode.
