Not a film...
but a 60 minute review of 2021
quite a good send up and a reminder of the year

Death to 2021 on Netflix

Paddington 2. Yes, it's a kids film, but it's also a great film.

I'm particularly enjoying Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit on Amazon Prime!
It's wonderful - touch of Hammer Horror

Having earlier suggested films to avoid, I thought I would suggest one this time.

Ghostbusters afterlife

It probably has more meaning if you were around for the originals but was entertaining in its own right. A good family film.

I'd give it a 7/10

I also saw The Last Dual, based on true events. I'm not sure if this was almost brilliant but a bit slow in the middle.

It takes the same event from 3 different individuals. The changes are quite nuanced so it appears a bit repetitive so you have to be on the ball to really appreciate it. Probably not family viewing.

Yeah I had to scupper that as the new years day choice for the massed family given I'd heard it reviewed
- it's written up in the synopsis as a kind of medieval action thing - which I gather it's really not (do want to see it as I think the casting and cinematography look excellent)
Encanto was a lot more palatable given the youngest viewer was 12 (excluding puppies)

Unfortunately Encanto's don't forget about Bruno is a constant presence atm. Either on film, on Spotify or just being sung generally.

saw it last night. Seems its a 3 x 55 minute TV mini series made into a 2:45 film. Really good intertwined plot that kept me guessing literally until a minute from the end... though a bit weird in places, heavily pushing a "all stunning women want to have really rough sex" angle which I found somewhat bizarre; I get the relevance to the overall plot but this was pushed quite hard (puns unintended!) for the first half, if not even most, of the film.

Probably at least 30 minutes too long.

We watched The Italian Job last night. Still one of my favourite films especially watching the driving of the minis. Our youngest grandson has just finished restoring a 1960s mini and he hadn't seen the film before. To say he was impressed is putting it mildly.

The 1969 Michael Caine original or the 2003 remake?

What are the chances of the remake being one of someone's favorite films? ;)

The 2003 film isn't really a remake in the usual sense. It has a different plot and different characters and, other than the opening scenes that set up the motivation for the rest of the story, it isn't even set in Italy!

It is, however, a homage to the original, with lots of nods to it and borrowed elements from it that will raise knowledgable smiles from anyone familiar with the original, and it's a pretty good watch even for those who aren't. ;)

The last three films I've watched are all worth considering (YouTube links below are to the trailers).

1) The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society (romantic drama). A book club formed in Guernsey during the Nazi occupation contacts a writer in London asking for some books. It's quite a sad film (nasty stuff during the war) but it has a nice ending. On Netflix and Amazon Prime (costs extra)

2) The Lake House (time travel romance). In 2004 an architect moves into a rented house. He receives a letter from the previous tenant asking him to forward any mail to her new address. Her letter was sent from 2006. Stars Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock. Amazon Prime has it (but it costs)

3) The Lucky One (romantic drama). A US Marine on patrol avoids being killed by a mortar because he left his position to examine something which turns out to be a photo of a woman. His team says that she must be his guardian angel. So when he leaves the Marines he sets off on foot across America (with his trusty dog) to find her. The Iraq scenes cover the first six minutes and there's no more war scenes in the rest of the film. On Amazon Prime (no extra cost)
