Re: Beckham
There's more to Beckham than you thought? Exactly how much were you expecting?
"43 days, 43 days!" the great man shouts ecstatically. Posh comes in and asks him what's going on?
"Listen, love I've finished this jigsaw in only 43 days. 43 days!!! Wow! And it says three to six years on the box."

I remember him recounting a story when interviewed once.
Apparently he was in a casino, standing at a vending machine, and repeatedly putting coins in, collecting cans of fizzy drink as they fell.
One of his team mates calls over to him to join them and he shouts back "Can't you see I'm winning!?"
pure class

Anyone know when he decided to get all those awful tattoos plastered all over his neck and hands, plus the rest we can't see. Later on when in Madrid, we start to see his back done. Not against the odd tat but................

Re: Beckham
A very funny and scathing review of this in the Sunday Times Culture. I can't find a (subscription free) link so here's an extract for a taste:
.....For people who are so hilarious they are totally without humour. Is it thickness? I'd always thought Victoria seemed quite clever. You don't build a multimillion pound global business, like she has, while being completely dense. Interview her for more than two minutes though, and you will see what a charmless, empty gobshite she actually is.

No, you marry a multi-millionaire who pumps money into it on a regular basis to keep it from going under.

Yes, that was my understanding too of her business's financial situation.

Re: Beckham
Not all one reads and surmises is true. David Belhassen, founder of NEO Investment Partners(think injected around 30 mill for a small stake in 2017), said revenue rose 42 percent to 58 million pounds last year, with more double-digit growth to come. Think they actually reported a healthy profit and recently made deals with some very upscale NY Dept Stores. I wish them both well. Regardless, for Becks to get Messi over was a major coup, plus one of their sons married an heiress....loads of money!!!!!!(clever boy)
and wait for it, next up a virtual reality show, I bet you just can't wait

2022 was the first year Victoria's business made a profit. Large losses prior to that for many years.

Re: Beckham
I know little about football and only read a few highlights and lowlights about David Beckham and Victoria over the years.
But really enjoyed the series, What a career! Amazed at the viciousness of the football spectators during the low parts. And the paparazzi who wouldn't leave celebrities alone. Sad reflections on our society?
The highlights were stunning. And relevant to this site, Beckham was no fool at investing.
Yes, cynically one knows that the Beckhams had editorial control, but what a brilliant and uplifting film.
Enjoyed every minute!

I started watching it not expecting to enjoy it, but (although I've not reached the end yet) it's confounded my expectations.
I'm glad I didn't read Camilla Long's bitchy and snobby review first, otherwise I might have been deterred, but I'm afraid that the term "charmless, empty gobshite" might more appropriately be aimed at the writer rather than her subject.
So far as I've seen both of them have come across as fairly decent people. They've been married for 24 years, which is pretty rare these days, especially in those circles, and something of an achievement in itself. They also seem to have brought up kids who are not noticeably obnoxious.
And there's no doubt that he was a brilliantly talented footballer who suffered a great deal from the astonishing amount of abuse that was piled on him after `that' sending off. (Incidentally, I'd forgotten the details, but having seen it again it was absurdly unjustified).
A lot of people - not just footballers - would have buckled under all that, and I think he's to be admired for having dealt with it and made a successful comeback. Likewise, it would have been easy for his wife to have become one of those WAGs that lunch, clogging up Wilmslow High Street with their 4x4's, but she set up and has worked hard to build a business that has been very successful. Retailers like Selfridges and Net-a-Porter don't take on labels that don't sell.
It's very easy for journalists like Long, with her privately educated / Oxford privileged background, to make fun of relatively uneducated working class people, and no doubt many of her readers are only too happy to join in the bullying. But her review says a lot more about her than it does of the Beckhams, and it's not at all flattering.

Re: Beckham
Interesting to note that the production company for the series - Studio99 is owned by Beckham. One of the exec producers is Gary Neville, Beck's best man. Another is Nicola Howson, Beck's publicist and a director of Beckham Brand Holdings. Unlikely then that he and his wife would be portrayed in a negative light.
